God's True Cashmere: Cashmere Shirts Born From a Dream

God's True Cashmere began with a dream about a friend who wanted more softness in his life, and a green cashmere shirt that did not exist yet. Notes on Sat Hari Khalsa's label, from the gemstone-snapped shirts to the newer linen pieces.

The Shirt, Made Softer

This is the most unusual origin story in the batch, and I mean that fondly. In October 2018, Sat Hari Khalsa, a holistic healer and jewelry designer, dreamed that her friend Brad Pitt wanted more softness in his life, specifically more green cashmere. When she told him, he said he had just asked his stylist for exactly that. She went looking for a cashmere button-up, could not find one, and had an Italian cashmere maker produce it. He loved it and joined her in the business.

The details are pure Sat Hari. Each shirt has hand-cut gemstone snaps, seven down the front for the chakras and eleven in total, the number of mastery in numerology. The Champagne Tartan shirt is the one I would buy, a proper shirt that happens to be cashmere.

Beyond The Cashmere

The label has since grown past cashmere, but softness stays at the center. The linen pieces are the warm-weather answer. The Twilight checked linen shirt uses the same kind of check the brand does in cashmere, so the two halves of the collection talk to each other, and the Linen-denim shirt borrows denim's structure while keeping linen's lightness.

I think this is the smarter entry point for a lot of people. A cashmere shirt at more than $2,000 is a big leap of faith, and the linen shirts give you the cut, the color sense and the spirit of the brand for roughly half of that. Wear one open over a tank in July and you will understand the appeal.

Buy The Shirt, Not The Story

The story behind God's True Cashmere is charming, but the reason to buy one is the shirt, not the dream. Cashmere this soft is lovely against the skin, and it is still only worth it if the shoulders and sleeves genuinely fit your frame. I would skip the loungewear if you already own soft sweatpants and put the money toward a shirt you can wear out to dinner. The checked cashmere styles read as real shirts, which is what justifies the price. Find the one in the color that makes you look rested, wear it constantly, and let the softness be the bonus it was always meant to be.
