Gorjana Necklace: The Laguna Beach Layering Story, From Parker to 14k

This Gorjana necklace edit covers chains, pendants, charms, chokers and 14k solid gold pieces from the Laguna Beach brand. I would start with one Parker and build the stack slowly.

Gorjana necklaces, from the apartment floor up

In 2004, Gorjana and Jason Reidel founded gorjana on their apartment floor in Laguna Beach, California. They had met at Arizona State University, and they started by making jewelry by hand. Hold that image for a second, because it explains a lot about the Gorjana necklace as I think of it: small, personal, built to be worn every day.

The brand's message is "live love layer," and the whole line is meant to be layered. That is the point of view I like. Gorjana talks about a quintessentially Californian jewelry line, and the necklaces behave that way: no single piece is the star, the stack is. A chain, then a second chain at a different length, then something with a little weight.

Chains are the right place to begin. In my fashion dreams, she is walking to a Sunday market in a white tee and a worn denim jacket, and the whole look hangs on three gold chains. The Parker Necklace in gold is the paperclip link that debuted in 2018 and is called the best-seller, with a hinged ring clasp at the front. The Parker Necklace in silver does the same job for anyone who lives in cool tones. The Crew Mini Link is the finest of the group, and the Venice Necklace is a flat polished snake chain that drapes smoothly. For close layering I would add the Venice Mini herringbone, then the wispy Bali.

The Parker XL is the chunky one, and the Tatum brings a link bar with tiny tonal charms. Practical tip: put the shortest chain on first and the longest last, then check that the clasps sit at the front or side so they do not tangle at the back of your neck.

Dog tags, coins and little hearts

Gorjana says it left the apartment floor behind in 2007, when growth let the couple move into a studio in Laguna Canyon. The pendants feel like the work of a studio: small stories hung on a chain. Pendant and coin necklaces are the second layer, the one that gives a stack its center.

The Griffin Dog Tag comes in silver with a polished rectangular tag on a bead chain, and in gold with a hammered tag. I would wear the gold one over a crewneck sweater with nothing else, which is a good October move. The Lou Heart is a fine gold chain with a small polished heart, quiet enough to sit under a collar. The Campbell Heart is ridged and puffed, a little bolder.

Then the coins. The Birthstone Coin has twelve birthstone options, the Compass Coin is etched and round, the Sunset Coin is octagonal and rippled, and the Rose Marble Coin has a round green malachite stone that I would put against a camel coat. Test it on your own: hold the pendant at the middle of your sternum and look in a mirror, because a coin that sits too low disappears under knitwear.

What I would skip: stacking three pendants of the same size. They compete, and the stack reads as one heavy blob.

Shell, pearl and ocean charm strands

Charm necklaces are where the brand's California mood is easiest to see. Gorjana describes jewelry made with intention, and a charm that means something to you is the simplest version of that idea.

The Ocean Mini Charm is a beaded strand with tiny shell, coral and pearl charms. The Reef Beach Mini Charm is a colorful bead strand with little gold shell and starfish charms. The Reese Pearl Mini Charm has a pearl strand with small gold shell and moon charms, and the Shell Pearl Charm keeps it to a single gold scallop on pearls. For something more graphic, the Wilshire Charm hangs a pair of interlocking rings, and the Vintage Heart Star has a navy enamel heart studded with stars.

Picture her at a late-October beach walk, sleeves pushed up, a beaded strand against a gray cashmere crew. That is the look. Add the Bella Mini Charm with its tiny heart, horseshoe and letter, or the Vintage Zodiac with a mother of pearl disc and twelve zodiac options, and you have a necklace that reads as a gift to yourself.

Fitting test: lift the charm and let it drop. If it spins and lands face-out, it sits well. What I would skip: wearing a busy bead strand with a patterned collar.

Chokers, pearl rows and stacking chains

Layering is the word the brand has built itself around, and these are the pieces that do the actual stacking. Short ones sit near the collarbone, longer ones fall below, and the contrast between them is what makes a layered look.

The Chloe Mini Choker is short and fine, with tiny gold beads at the front. The Finley Mini Pearl is a close strand of tiny pearls, while the Finley Pearl Row is a fine chain with a row of imitation pearls across the front. The Florence Pearl Chain is half pearls, half gold paperclip link, which is the one I would pick if I only wanted to wear one necklace but still wanted two textures. The Parker Mini and the Parker Delicate, in 16 or 20 inch options, are the slim versions of the Parker for stacking. The Capri Layer already comes as two stacked fine chains with turquoise beads, and the Atlas Delicate Lariat adds a charm drop.

My test: try the choker first, then add one chain that lands about two inches lower, and one more at least two inches lower than that. If the lengths are bunched, the stack looks accidental in the wrong way.

What I would skip: a choker with a high turtleneck. Save it for a scoop or a V.

14k solid gold Gorjana necklaces

In 2019, gorjana developed its first fine jewelry collection, with diamonds, 14K gold, sapphires, turquoise, opals, topaz and other gemstones. The 14K solid gold necklaces here belong to that side of the brand, and they are the ones I would wear without ever taking off.

The 14K Gold Parker is the 2018 paperclip link remade in solid gold. The Birthstone Necklace has a small round pendant with twelve birthstone options, and the Heart Mini has a flat heart on a fine chain. The Mama Necklace has block letters, which is a gift I would reach for in November. The Pearl Flutter hangs five small pearls from a fine chain, the Newport spaces tiny gold beads along the chain, the Amour has small flat hearts across the front, and the Cross Charm is the quietest of all.

Solid gold is meant to stay in place, so I would use it as the anchor of a stack and let the plated chains around it do the changing. Check the clasp and the spacing of beads against your neckline in daylight.

What I would skip: stacking all of them at once. One solid piece worn daily is enough.

How I would build the stack

Back to the apartment floor in Laguna Beach. Two people, a handful of samples, and a plan for a line that anyone could pile on. I would start with one Parker, in gold or silver, wear it alone for a week, then add a second chain at a different length.

Next comes the pendant: a coin, a heart or a charm strand. If you love one enough to wear daily, think about the solid gold version.

Layering is a habit, not a rule, and the best ones look like they grew over years. That, to me, is the real Gorjana necklace.
