Hair removal cream dissolves hair at the surface instead of cutting it, and I pair it with fixes for ingrown hairs. I go through Flamingo's cream, shaving picks, four products for bumps and aftercare.
Hair Removal Cream and Ingrown Hairs: Flamingo and Fixes

People have been trying to dissolve body hair for a very long time. The Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian medical text from around 1550 BC, records depilatory recipes, one of them using hippopotamus fat and turtle shell. Nair, launched in America in 1940, popularized the chemistry that hair removal cream still uses, breaking down the keratin bonds in hair so it can be wiped away. Flamingo launched in October 2018 as the first brand out of Harry's Labs, led by Allie Melnick and Brittania Boey, who had both worked at Harry's since the start, and its body cream is the modern version of that old chemistry. Always patch test on your inner arm 24 hours before, and never use it on broken, sunburned or freshly shaved skin. If you would rather shave, Santa Maria Novella's before and after cream comes from the Florentine pharmacy that dates to 1221, Hanni's shave pillow is a gel stick for dry shaving without water, and Well Kept's brass safety razor was designed for women by two founders in Vancouver who were tired of plastic.

Dealing with bumps
Whichever method you use, the second row is for the bumps that follow. Fur started with an oil for pubic hair that became unexpectedly famous on Instagram, and its Ingrown Eliminator line grew from there, made by two childhood friends in New York. Soft Services, from two Glossier alumnae, calls itself the first targeted body-care company, and its green banana buffing bar is a firm exfoliating bar for keratosis pilaris and ingrown hairs. Topicals was founded by two pre-med students, Olamide Olowe, who grew up with razor bumps, and Claudia Teng, and High Roller uses AHA and BHA to target visible bumps. Eadem, founded by two friends who met at Google, adds azelaic acid to Smooth Slate for dark spots, which matters on deeper skin tones.
Aftercare, and the skip
The last row is the gentle end of the routine. Luna Daily's Everywhere Oil blends eight oils, including jojoba and tamanu, and Katy Cottam developed it with dermatologists and gynecologists for all skin, including intimate skin. Jack Black started in Texas in 2000 as skincare for men, and Bump Fix works on razor bumps anywhere. Nécessaire was named for the question of whether a product is really necessary, and its founders started with body care because it had long been an afterthought; the Body Exfoliator combines a physical and a chemical exfoliant in one wash. What I would skip is exfoliating the same day you use a depilatory. Wait at least a day, or the skin can sting. If bumps turn painful or infected, see a dermatologist.

Cream or razor
Use cream when your skin tolerates it and you want the result to last a little longer than a shave. Reach for a razor when you are in a hurry or your skin is reactive. Either way, exfoliate gently two or three times a week between sessions and moisturize daily. That alone prevents most bumps.
