h:ours Dresses: The Best Dresses to Know

h:ours Dresses: The Best Dresses to Know

h:ours is the Los Angeles label that makes clothes for after dark: sequins, slip shapes and off-shoulder tops. I like how plainly it knows what it is for, and this edit starts with the dresses.

A label for the after-dark hours

I admit I dress for the second half of the night more carefully than the first, so h:ours was always going to get my attention. It launched in April 2017 from Alliance Apparel, the Los Angeles label house behind Lovers + Friends, Tularosa and LPA. Raissa Gerona and Mitch Moseley founded that company in 2014, and I credit them as the people behind the house that built h:ours.

The launch was very specifically after dark: off-shoulder tops, embellished pieces and slip dresses in pop colors and muted neutrals. I like that directness. These are clothes for a dinner, a dance floor or a late party, and the label is not trying to be everything in my closet. I went deeper on a related idea in Aya Muse Dresses: What Shoppers Should Know.

The dresses carry the most obvious sparkle and cutouts, while the tops give the same nightlife idea a more mix-and-match shape.

Dresses built for a late invitation

After dark is a useful filter. I would start with the Cynlee Mini Dress in Black Noir, whose stretch jersey keeps the silhouette clean, then choose the Julinha Dress in Bordeaux when an allover sequin finish is the point. The Lambert Mini Dress in Hot Pink moves the party into a brighter lane. One clean line, one textured surface and one flash of color is a better plan than asking every dress to compete.

Picture her in the Julinha Dress at a late dinner, with a simple sandal and a small bag to balance the sparkle. For the Lambert Mini Dress, I would keep jewelry restrained and pick shoes she can actually stand in. The Cynlee Mini Dress can take a bolder earring.

Vega Dress, Estelle Mini Dress and Rei Dress are the next ones I would try on, and Safia Mini Dress, Delacey Mini Dress and Minju Mini Dress keep the short, bright mood going. Cristiano Mini Dress, Shay Mini Dress and Mila Mini Dress round out the rack.

Tops for a night with options

The tops are where h:ours makes its party case without asking for a full dress. The Sutra Bodysuit layers sheer mesh over a one-shoulder bandeau, so I would pair it with a high-rise trouser or a fluid skirt and keep the transparency deliberate. The Arya Top has a cross-tie front and metallic ring trim, a small place to start when one detail should carry the look.

The Ariella Corset Top brings more structure, and it is sold separately from any bottom, so choose something with a clean waist. Halsey Bodysuit, Rizzo Top and Inez Crop Top are the easy ones to throw over trousers you already own.

Picture her in the Sutra Bodysuit with straight black trousers and a low shoe, letting the blue-violet bandeau be the only color note. What I would skip with the Arya Top or Ariella Corset Top is a busy print on the lower half.

The night has a shape

h:ours makes the most sense when I know the night has a shape: a late dinner, a birthday, a dance floor, or an event where a simple dress will not carry the mood. The label found its lane in 2017 with sequins, slip shapes and off-shoulder tops, and it still plays with color and cut.

I would start with one strong detail and let the rest of the outfit stay calm. Although I suspect the calm part is the first thing to go once the music starts.
