How to Wear a Handkerchief Scarf

The handkerchief scarf became a street style signature at the spring 2026 shows, tied over the hair or knotted at the neck. These four outfits show how to wear one with a crisp shirt, a blazer, a leather jacket and a knit. There are eight square scarves to choose from, in silk and cotton, prints and solids.

Four Scarves to Start With

The handkerchief took off outside the spring 2026 shows, when Rosalía arrived at Calvin Klein in a navy printed bandanna and Copenhagen showgoers turned small scarves into hats. It works just as well knotted at the throat. Start with Acne Studios' burgundy checked silk-satin scarf, Guest in Residence's sage cotton and silk Wild Rag, Flore Flore's red frayed cotton scarf or Skall's navy printed cotton bandanna.

With a Crisp Shirt

A scarf tied at the neck of a crisp shirt is the most classic way in. Saint Laurent's paisley silk-twill scarf knots neatly at the open neckline of Ssstein's blue Skipper cotton shirt, and Slvrlake's dark straight Chloe jeans keep the rest simple. Thom Browne's camel loafers make it look like a weekend in the country.

Under a Blazer

A silk square fills the neckline of a blazer the way a tie once did. Valentino's white and red polka-dot Foulard scarf sits under Victoria Beckham's dark grey double-breasted Beatrice blazer, and Max Mara's camel wool wide-leg trousers add warmth. Aeyde's forest-green suede Tiby ballet flats bring in a third colour.

With a Leather Jacket

Leather and silk is a contrast that keeps working, and this is the look where the scarf can move up to the hair. Nili Lotan's leopard-print silk Savanna scarf goes at the neck or over the head, with Alaïa's black cropped leather jacket and Agolde's white Long Line Adine tee underneath. Paris Texas's black leather Bettina ankle boots finish it.

Knotted Over a Knit

A printed scarf tied over a sweater adds pattern without adding bulk. Alémais's red printed silk-twill Ace scarf knots at the neck of Kallmeyer's off-white cotton-blend Yasmin sweater, and Gabriela Hearst's grey Freddie midi skirt in wool, cashmere and silk keeps the palette soft. Isabel Marant's tan suede Maia shoulder bag adds a western note.

Our honest take

The handkerchief scarf is the easiest trend of the season to try, because a square of silk or cotton works with almost everything you own. If you take one thing away, let it be that the knot matters more than the print, so practise a small, tight knot at the side of the neck before trying anything elaborate. We would skip long, skinny scarves for this look, since they tie differently and read more formal. A cotton bandanna is the most forgiving place to start, and silk is the upgrade once you know how you like to wear it. Over the hair, tie it at the nape rather than under the chin for a look that feels current rather than retro.
