How to Wear Fringe This Fall

How to Wear Fringe This Fall

Fringe was all over the New York spring shows this September, and it works right now if you wear it with restraint. Here is how I would wear it this fall, one swinging piece at a time.

You walk, it swings, and a plain skirt suddenly has a pulse.

Fringe on the top half is harder, so I keep the shapes simple. A fitted knit with fringe at the cuff or hem looks considered, while a fringed top worn with a fringed skirt looks like a costume. Simkhai's Natalia polo, charcoal with fringe at the wrists, and Guest in Residence's striped Western sweater are the easy wins here. Bottega Veneta's white fringed cardigan and Alix of Bohemia's Sami cardigan go further, with fringe that moves every time you reach for your coffee. The coats are the statement:

The lowest-commitment fringe lives on accessories. A fringed scarf thrown over a navy coat, or a suede bag with fringe down the sides, adds movement without changing the whole outfit. What I would skip: fringe on fringe on fringe. A fringed bag, fringed shoes and a fringed jacket together read as a theme party. One piece per outfit, or two if one of them is a scarf.
