John & Jenn by Line is the Toronto knitwear label with a taste for texture, saturated color and one small surprise in the shape. I would rather own one sweater I reach for than five I admire.

John & Jenn by Line Knitwear: What to Buy First
The knitwear behind John + Jenn
I have a theory that a good sweater should earn its space because you reach for it, not because it asks you to rebuild the outfit around it. John + Jenn seems to agree. The label launched in 2012 with retro classics and street style in mind, playful textures and forward shapes, which sounds to me like a useful premise rather than a trend report.
The story begins with Line, the Toronto knitwear label John Muscat and Jennifer Wells created in 2000. John + Jenn grew out of it as a younger sister, designed by the same two people around signatures from the original collection. Line was known for draping, embellishment and exaggerated detail, and I can see that instinct in the contrast between a clean everyday layer and a saturated color or checked knit.
I would start with the sweater I know I will wear, then let a cardigan or dress bring the personality. It feels like a wardrobe conversation rather than a makeover, which is the best kind.

Knitwear with a twist
I like how this collection moves between quiet neutrals and more playful color. The Emmett Sweater in chocolate and Charlie Sweater in birch are easy starting points, while the Carmen Sweater in denim fade moves the same outfit into a cooler palette. The Woodley Cardigan adds a checked pattern, the Benny Cardigan in electric cobalt is the clearest color hit, and the Dexter Dress carries the knit idea beyond separates. The Jax Sweater, Declan Pullover and Oliver Sweater fill in the plainer days.
Picture her in the Woodley Cardigan over a plain tee and straight jeans, or the Rene Cardigan in burnt ember over a simple dark skirt. The point is texture, not a complicated formula. When a knit already has color or pattern, I keep the rest of the outfit quiet and let that detail talk. What I would skip: layering a cardigan before you have tried it on its own, buttoned, to see how it really sits.

A sweater with something to say
There is a quiet confidence in a knit with one thing to say: a punch of color, a checked pattern or an unexpected shoulder line. In my fashion dreams, she wears the Woodley Cardigan with relaxed trousers and flat shoes, then saves the Benny Cardigan for the day she wants more color. Line gives the collection a clear center, and the 2012 label still has room to play, although I suspect I would end up in the chocolate one.
