Jung Saem Mool, the Makeup Artist Behind the Cushion

Jung Saem Mool, the Makeup Artist Behind the Cushion

Jung Saem Mool spent decades doing celebrity makeup in Seoul before she put her name on a cushion compact. Here are eight Jung Saem Mool and Korean base, prep and cheek picks, plus eight blushes, lip treatments and a BB cream to compare.

Magazine-style product test page with five cut-out products and a best-for note on each: JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Skin Nuder Long-Lasting Hydrating Compact Cushion Foundation; JUNG SAEM MOOL Artist Cushion Soft Matte Blur Long-lasting Blush; JUNG SAEM MOOL Essential Mool Hydrating 3-in-1 Micro Fitting Mist; JUNG SAEM MOOL Pro-lasting Prep Face Primer; Dr. Jart+ Premium BB All-Day Wear Korean Tinted Moisturizer

A Seoul Makeup Artist Turned Brand

Jung Saem Mool started her career in 1991, and Allure calls her one of Korea's best known celebrity makeup artists. The same piece says she is widely credited with popularizing the whole glass skin idea. She introduced her namesake brand in 2015, with the Essential Skin Nuder cushion as the hero. One report says that cushion reportedly sells every 20 seconds, which I would take as a company-friendly figure rather than gospel.

I like the backstory because it explains the products. A blog profile says she trained other artists at her own academy in Seoul before the line existed, and that her 2001 look for the film My Sassy Girl went the opposite way from heavy liner: clean skin, full brows, a barely there lip. That is a working artist's idea of makeup, skin first, and you can feel it in a cushion with a textured mix and touch area under the lid, which lets you sheer product out before it reaches the sponge.

If you searched for jung saem mool, you probably want that skin-first finish. The first grid is the brand itself, from the cushion foundation to a mist, prep cream and primer, plus two other Korean cushions. The second grid is blushes, lip treatments and a BB cream I compared against it.

My tip: press the cushion on in thin layers with the puff, and let it sit for a minute before you add blush.

Eight Korean Picks for Base, Prep and Cheeks

The Jung Saem Mool Essential Skin Nuder is the cushion foundation to start with. It has medium coverage and a natural finish, and the brand says it is infused with a 66 percent hydrating blend, so it leans dewy rather than flat. The Artist Cushion Soft Matte Blur Blush and the Artist Cushion Radiant Glow Highlighter use the same sponge-and-compact idea for cheeks. The blush is soft matte and listed as oil free, so it suits combination skin, and the highlighter is a liquid with a glass skin glow.

Underneath all that sit the prep steps. The Essential Mool Hydrating 3-in-1 Micro Fitting Mist is alcohol free and works for every skin type. The Essential Mool Makeup Prep Cream is a liquid-to-cream texture for normal and dry skin, and it is listed as silicone free. The Pro-lasting Prep Face Primer is the opposite: a matte, pore-blurring cream that I would hand to someone with oily skin.

Two more Korean cushions round out the grid. The Yepoda Dewy Day cushion has niacinamide and apricot oil and suits normal to dry skin best. The Sulwhasoo UV Wise On-The-Go Sun Cushion is an SPF 50+ compact with hyaluronic acid and squalane, so it is the one to keep in a bag for reapplying.

What I would skip: the matte primer if your skin is dry. Use the prep cream there, or the dewy Yepoda cushion over the mist.

Blushes, Lip Treats and a BB Cream

These are the comparisons, and they lean glossy and playful. Kaja has the most here. Cheeky Stamp Blendable Blush is a cushion blush with a heart-shaped applicator, one stamp for a soft flush and two for a stronger pop. Jelly Charm Glazed Lip Stain and Blush does double duty with a jelly finish, and Dewy Bar Blush and Lip Balm is a melting multi-stick for cheeks and lips together. Juicy Glass Lip Oil is the nonsticky gloss of the group.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dewy Flush is a tinted serum blush with 3 percent niacinamide, and it suits normal, dry and combination skin. It is the most skincare-like thing in this grid. If you want something close to a cushion blush in feel, the Kaja stamp is nearer.

For lips, LANEIGE has two. Glaze Craze Tinted Polypeptide Lip Serum is a tinted treatment with a buildable high shine, and Lip Glowy Balm is a shea butter balm that stays light. Dr. Jart+ Premium BB All-Day Wear is a Korean tinted moisturizer with SPF 30 and medium coverage, with a natural finish, so it is the base comparison to the cushion foundation if you prefer a tube.

What I would skip: the lip oil and lip serum if you want a matte mouth. Both are all about shine.

Start With the Cushion

I think the Essential Skin Nuder is where this brand makes sense, and the rest of the line follows from it. Pick the prep step that matches your skin, then add a cheek product if you want the full look. If you are not ready to commit, one of the blushes or a BB cream will tell you whether you like a dewy, skin-first base. Press, do not rub, and give it a minute to settle before you decide.
