Kayali Perfume: A Dessert-Scented Shelf You Are Meant to Layer

Kayali Perfume: A Dessert-Scented Shelf You Are Meant to Layer

Kayali perfume is built to be layered, and this edit sorts the full-size eaux de parfum, the minis and travel sprays, and the body creams, body sprays and gift sets by how I would actually use them. It covers bottles and sets from Vanilla 28 to the Oudgasm travel sprays.

Kayali says it was founded in 2018 by beauty entrepreneur Mona Kattan, and the name translates to "my imagination" in Arabic, according to the brand. I like that, because it tells you what to expect. Kayali perfume is not about finding one signature and staying faithful. It draws on the Middle Eastern tradition of layering perfumes, which Mona Kattan calls the philosophy at the heart of the brand, and the brand describes its approach as encouraging you to layer, experiment and create a scent mood of your own.

The numbers in the names are the other thing people ask about. They show how many iterations it took to earn Mona's approval. I read that as a small flex of patience, and it makes the names easier to shop: Vanilla 28 is the twenty-eighth try. Kayali also says it collaborates with renowned perfumers and describes its fragrances as cruelty-free.

This first grid is the full-size eaux de parfum, every one in the 1.7 oz bottle. Start with Vanilla 28. It pairs vanilla orchid and Madagascar vanilla with tonka and brown sugar over a musk and amber base, and it is the one Mona's community talks about most. Mona recommends it as a layering topper, likening it to adding whipped cream to a favorite dessert. That is the most useful sentence in the whole brand, honestly.

Yum Boujee Marshmallow 81 has fluffy pink marshmallow, strawberry and freesia with whipped vanilla and coconut, and Mona suggests layering it with Freedom Musk Santal 34. If sweet is your lane, Vanilla Candy Rock Sugar 42, Boujee Kitty Caramel Milk 22 and Utopia Vanilla Coco 21 stay in that sugary, creamy territory, and Yum Pistachio Gelato 33 brings the pistachio. For fruit and florals, look at Eden Juicy Apple 01, Eden Sparkling Lychee 39 and Fleur Majesty Rose Royale 31. The Wedding Silk Santal 36 and Freedom Musk Santal 34 are the quieter, skin-close ones, and Lovefest Burning Cherry 48 is the loudest of the group.

Minis and travel sprays for trying a mood

The second grid is where I would start if I have never worn Kayali. A mini or a travel spray lets you test a scent on a normal week, in the car, at your desk, on the walk home, before you commit to the big bottle. It is also how the brand's layering idea really works: carry two small sprays and combine them.

The Mini Maldives in a Bottle Ylang Coco 20, Mini Capri in a Bottle Lemon Sugar 14, Mini Maui in a Bottle Sweet Banana 37 and Mini Marrakesh in a Bottle Orange Blossom 24 are the vacation group. Their names are travel postcards, and the scent words in them, ylang, coco, lemon, banana and orange blossom, tell you most of what you need. I would reach for the lemon one when I want something bright over a skin-close base, and the banana one when I want to smell like a beach holiday on a Tuesday.

Then there is the Oudgasm trio: Vanilla Oud 36, Chocolate Oud 11 and Rose Oud 16, all in Eau de Parfum Intense travel spray format. Oud scents can read heavy, so a small spray is a sensible way to find out if you like them. Try one on a wrist, wait, and see how you feel an hour later before you decide anything.

The Freedom Musk trio, Mini Freedom Musk Bouquet 27, Latte 41 and Matcha 45, are the easy ones for layering over each other or under a vanilla. The Wedding Velvet Santal 35 Mini Replica and Mini Eden Plush Pear 23 round out the grid. My small test: spray a mini on the inside of your elbow, not your wrist, and walk around for a bit, so the scent has room to settle before you judge it.

Body creams, body sprays and gift sets

Layering does not have to stop at perfume. The third grid is for building a scent mood from the skin up, and it is the part of Kayali I find most fun, because the same name shows up in three formats.

The Yum Boujee Marshmallow 81 Silk Soufflé Body Cream and the Yum Pistachio Gelato 33 Silk Soufflé Body Cream both come with hyaluronic acid and the Kayali Dream Elixir, per the product names. A body cream in the same scent as your perfume makes the fragrance feel like part of the whole routine. I would apply the cream after a shower, then add a spray of the matching eau de parfum on top, or swap in a different scent for contrast.

The Yum Pistachio Gelato 33 Body Spray and Lovefest Burning Cherry 48 Body Spray are the lighter, quicker option. A body spray is what I would keep in a gym bag or a desk drawer for a fast refresh, and the matching names make it easy to pair with a bottle you already own. The cherry one, in particular, is a fun partner to the sweeter vanillas.

The sets are the easiest gifts. The Marshmallow Candy Mini Duo Perfume Gift Set, Discovery Layering Set 06 and Vacay in a Bottle Discovery Set are built for trying and combining, and the Dreamy Obsessions Mini Replica Perfume Gift Set is a small collection for a person who likes variety.

What I would skip: layering three or four strong scents on the same day while you are still learning what each one smells like. Start with two, a vanilla and a musk or a fruit, and keep the body spray to the same family as the perfume you chose.

How I would build a Kayali shelf

Here is how I would build a Kayali shelf without overthinking it. Pick one anchor, and Vanilla 28 is the obvious place to begin, since Mona herself calls it a layering topper. Add one fruit or floral, such as Eden Sparkling Lychee 39 or Fleur Majesty Rose Royale 31, and one musk, such as Freedom Musk Santal 34, which Mona pairs with Yum Boujee Marshmallow 81.

The concentration is worth knowing. Vogue says an eau de parfum typically contains 15% to 20% fragrance oil, versus 5% to 15% for an eau de toilette, which is lighter. Every full-size bottle here is an eau de parfum, so you do not need a heavy hand. One or two sprays is a good place to start, and then you can add a second scent on top.

Test in this order. Smell the bottle, spray it on skin rather than paper, give it time and walk around. Then add a second scent and see whether it still feels like you. If you like the result, buy the full size. If you do not, you still have a pretty mini for your bag.

That is the real point of the brand: your scent mood is something you make, not something you are handed. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Tory Burch Perfume and Very Good Girl Perfume.
