Khadlaj Island Dreams, from a Family Perfume House in the UAE

Khadlaj Island Dreams is a citrus and musk extrait from a UAE house that has been making perfume since 1997. This edit follows it through the Island family and into the sweeter and the woodier corners of the Khadlaj line.

Khadlaj Perfumes was established in January 1997 by Mohamed Iqbal Abdul Sattar, a perfumer who now has more than 45 years in the trade, and the company describes itself as a family house that makes Arabic and French style fragrances. Its specialties are the traditional ones: dehn al oud, rose and musk. The manufacturing facility is in Ras Al Khaimah and the head office is in Sharjah, and his son Asif Mohamed Iqbal Katchi now carries the business forward. Against that background, Khadlaj Island Dreams is the brand's bright, modern face. The notes that are listed for it are simple and easy to read: ginger and bergamot on top, grapefruit in the heart, and musk with ambroxan underneath. It launched in 2025 as an extrait de parfum, which is the more concentrated end of the scale. It is also a unisex fragrance in the plainest sense, so I am writing this for anyone who likes a sunny citrus that settles into something soft.

Twelve boxes on a pale gray page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Khadlaj Island Dreams Extrait de Parfum, Khadlaj Island Extrait de Parfum, Khadlaj Island Vanilla Dunes Extrait de Parfum, Khadlaj Island Sun, Khadlaj Cloud Candy Eau de Parfum, Khadlaj La Fede Aura Vanilla Milk, Khadlaj Cream Velvet Extrait de Parfum, Khadlaj Sawaar Vanille Blanc Extrait de Parfum, Khadlaj Shiyaaka Snow Eau de Parfum, Khadlaj Karus Gold Absolu, Khadlaj Icon Eau de Parfum and Khadlaj La Fede Intoxicate Blue Elixir.
Khadlaj Island Dreams

Sugar, cream and white vanilla

Grid two is the dessert end of the line, and it is a good place to see how the house handles sweetness. Cloud Candy is the playful one, with strawberry, green tangerine and freesia on top, marshmallow, coconut and whipped cream in the middle, and vanilla, sugar, raspberry and ambroxan underneath. Cream Velvet is an amber gourmand with butter and caramel, honey, jasmine and tonka, then amber, vanilla and musk. Sawaar Vanille Blanc starts with vanilla, powdered sugar and apple before it moves into white florals and cashmere, with sandalwood and benzoin at the base. La Fede Aura Vanilla Milk is the odd one out here, and I like it for that: mandarin, bergamot and pink pepper, then freesia, lily, lavender and jasmine, over sandalwood, amber, vetiver and musk. Smell each on skin rather than paper, because the sweet ones turn creamier after twenty minutes and the citrus one turns woodier.

Four more to try next

Woods, lavender and fruit

Grid three is the cooler, more aromatic side. Shiyaaka Snow opens with mandarin, citrus and bergamot, goes through neroli, nutmeg and pink pepper, and lands on Indonesian vetiver oil and cardamom. Icon is bergamot, then lavender, incense and labdanum, over amber, suede and sandalwood. La Fede Intoxicate Blue Elixir is the strangest of the set on paper, with mint and lavender up top, vanilla and honey in the middle, and tonka bean and tobacco underneath. Karus Gold Absolu goes the other way, toward sapodilla, freesia, violet and rosewood, with musk, amber and sandalwood. The listings for several of these are written with a particular wearer in mind, but I would ignore that and follow the notes. What I would skip is wearing a strong, concentrated bottle like a splash. One or two sprays on the chest or neck and the rest of the day takes care of itself.

Wearing an extrait

The word on the box tells you how the bottle behaves. Extrait or perfume extract is traditionally the highest concentration, usually cited around 20 to 40 percent perfume oil, against roughly 12 to 20 for an eau de parfum and 5 to 12 for an eau de toilette. More oil generally means a denser, closer scent rather than a louder one. That is why I treat these as a two-spray affair. Put one on your chest, one at the back of your neck, and let a citrus like Island Dreams settle before you decide what it is. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Mykonos Perfume and Very Good Girl Perfume.
