Kit Kemp's rooms tell stories through pattern

I return to Kit Kemp's interiors for the feeling that every room holds another discovery: pattern, art, antiques, craft and a little wit. Her home collections bring that storytelling into everyday rituals, from illustrated china to embroidered cushions and soft throws.

Kemp founded Kit Kemp Design Studio and co-founded Firmdale Hotels with her husband Tim in 1985, where she is creative director. The group has eleven hotels and eight restaurants across London and New York. Her 2026 book Design Stories is her fifth, opening up hotel, residential and collaborative projects.

Her collaborations make familiar rooms feel personal

Her Chelsea Textiles collaboration turns fabric into playful little narratives, often with animals and folkloric characters. In the Wedgwood Mythical Creatures line, embroidered fabric designs become illustrated fine bone china with gold detailing.

That mix is what makes these pieces feel so distinctly Kemp: a familiar room with a visual surprise tucked into it. For fall and winter, the Shop Kit Kemp collection offers the Firmdale Hotel bedspreads and throws for the home, adding texture without making the rest of a room feel overly matched.

Where I would start with Kit Kemp's home style

I'd start with the Mythical Creatures tableware, then carry the same story into a Chelsea Textiles cushion. Finish with a throw on the sofa or the end of the bed. That balance of handwork and humor is why I keep coming back to Kit Kemp's rooms.
