Knit Polo

Knit Polo

A men's edit of knit polos with a refined collar, from classic piqué to cashmere and ribbed knits. For warm-weather events when a tee is too casual.

A knit polo is what I tell men to wear when a tee feels too casual and a button-down feels like too much. The collar gives you structure and the knit gives you drape, so it works for a wedding in warm weather or a dinner on a patio. Sunspel's cotton polo in navy and Polo Ralph Lauren's oatmeal knit are the two I would start with, because they go with everything from chinos to white trousers. I went deeper on a related idea in Polo Tops for Spring: Cropped, Rugby and Knit Polos.

For a softer, quieter look, the black cashmere polo from COS and the sage Johnny collar from J.Crew are my picks. Orlebar Brown's Tiernan has buttons down the front, which makes it feel closer to a cardigan, and Far Afield's ribbed polo in light green is the one with the most character. Lacoste and Quince cover the classic piqué. Hold the fabric up to the light before you buy, since a good knit should not be see-through.
