La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer is the plain daily cream I keep coming back to when I want my skin to feel like nothing at all. Here is how I build around it: barrier moisturizers, gentle cleansers that leave skin comfortable, and hydrating serums that go on first.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer, My Everyday Reset
Toleriane Double Repair launched in 2017, and it was designed as a universal daily cream for dermatology patients. I love that idea. Most moisturizers are marketed with a big claim. This one started with a practical problem: finding something a person with reactive skin could use every single day, morning and night, without thinking twice. The maker, La Roche-Posay, has been asking versions of that question since a pharmacist named René Levayer founded it in 1975 near a French thermal spring, and it joined an Active Cosmetics Division in 1989.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer is smooth and light, and it sinks in fast. There is an SPF version of the same cream too, which I keep for mornings when I am running late and would rather do one step than two.
The other four in this grid each take a slightly different approach to barrier care. Drunk Elephant's Protini is a firming moisturizer with peptides, and refillable, so I keep it for night. Farmacy's Honey Halo is an ultra-hydrating ceramide moisturizer. Eadem's Cloud Cushion is a plumping, ceramide- and peptide-rich moisturizer for skin that wants a softer, plumper look. Biossance's Omega Repair mixes ceramides, hyaluronic acid and squalane into a gentle, hydrating cream.
Pick one, use a pea-sized amount for the whole face, and press it in with your palms. I test a new cream on one cheek for a few days first, because the plainest formula is only plain if your skin agrees. Then I decide whether it earns a permanent spot by the sink, and I leave the other four for nights when I want something different.

Cleansers that leave skin comfortable
A moisturizer can only do so much if the cleanser before it has left skin feeling scrubbed. This is the step that I think people underestimate. If your face feels tight after washing, that is your cue to change the cleanser, not to pile on cream.
Aestura's ATOBARRIER365 cleanser is a gentle, pH-balancing foam made for sensitive, dehydrated skin. Sincerely Yours' Kindly Clean is a hydrating and soothing gel that lathers softly and rinses off clean. Glow Recipe's Blueberry Bounce is a gentle cleanser that I choose for mornings. Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Revival is a foaming gentle cleanser with hyaluronic acid, a little more like a spa treatment. Lancôme's Crème Radiance is a creamy foam, while The Ordinary's Glycolipid Cream Cleanser is meant for dry skin and makeup removal.
I wash for about thirty seconds with lukewarm water, pat my skin dry with a soft towel, and move to the next step while it is still slightly damp. Damp skin also makes the next layer easier to spread.
If you wear waterproof makeup, do a first pass with a cream cleanser on dry skin and then rinse. That way the gel or foam only needs to handle what is left, and you avoid scrubbing at your eyes. It is a tiny change, and it makes every cleanser on this list feel gentler.

Hydrating serums, applied damp
Serums are where I get playful, but I keep the rule strict: hydrating first, on damp skin, then a cream to close. Hydrating serums add water, and a moisturizer on top helps keep it there.
Summer Fridays' Jet Lag Deep Hydration Serum is the one I pack in my carry-on. The INKEY List's Polyglutamic Acid serum is lightweight and easy to layer, and Torriden's 5D Hyaluronic Acid serum is a watery, plumping formula that soaks in fast. Ole Henriksen's Barrier Booster is a milky toner essence with vitamin C and niacinamide, a light layer to press on. Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate is a face oil serum, the richest of the lot and a nice finish on dry winter nights.
The last product is a bit of a surprise: ciele's tint and PROTECT is a medium-coverage serum foundation with SPF 50 or higher. It is what I would put on after the cream, when I want skin to look evened out without the weight of a full foundation.
What I would skip: layering three serums in the same routine just because they are hydrating. Choose one water-based serum and one oil-type at most, and give skin a few minutes between layers. More steps do not mean more moisture, and skin that pills or feels sticky is telling you to cut back.

Packing the routine light
If I had to travel with one small routine, it would be a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum, Toleriane Double Repair and a sunscreen. That is four things, and all of them fit in a small pouch.
Use them in that order, morning and night, for two or three weeks before you decide anything. If your skin feels more comfortable, less tight and less prone to flaking around the nose, keep going. If a product stings or burns, stop using it. Persistent redness, rashes or dryness that will not settle deserve a visit to a doctor.
On days when skin feels especially dry, I add a second thin layer of the cream at the cheeks and leave the forehead alone. Small adjustments like that, and a bit of patience, beat buying a new product every time the weather shifts, and they keep the whole shelf calm, short and easy to explain to a friend. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lip Balm and Other Barrier Balms for Dry Lips and La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum.
