Lariat necklace spans gold sliders, pearl and beaded drops, diamond and stone designs, and silver Y shapes. I would choose by the closure and where I want the drop to land.

Lariat necklace: The Long Line That Changes Its Mind
A longer line in gold
In London around 1910 to 1920, beadwork designer Madeleine Marguerite Perrier made a black-beaded lariat now held by the V&A. I like that as an origin point: a real necklace, a named maker, and a shape already treated as an object in its own right. The Lariat necklace keeps that old idea in motion, even when the chain is gold instead of beads.
The word lariat belongs first to a livestock rope, and jewelry borrows its useful geometry: a line you can loop, feed through, or let fall. Perrier's London atelier patented beadwork techniques for chokers and collars. Her V&A lariat is described as a long necklace of black beads, which feels like an argument for letting the shape do the work.
Gold is where this set gets more precise. Gorjana's Atlas can be a 20-inch chain or an open drop, Mejuri's Interconnected X uses a silicone stopper to hold its slider, and LANA's Nude 14K Gold has a four-inch fall. Set & Stones Ezra pairs gold-filled chain with cubic zirconia; Oradina's Manhattan stays in solid 14K gold with two petite discs.
I would decide on the drop before the metal: a longer line reads clearly over a plain knit, while a short chain can sit under an open collar. Check the listed length and fastening, because these designs include sliders, a lobster clasp, and a fixed open drop. The long necklace is not always a free end you tie yourself.

Pearls, beads, and tassels
Pearls soften the line, which is why I like them with an open collar or a plain crewneck. In the 1920s, long strands could be looped or tied into a Y; a V&A necklace or sautoir from France around 1920 is described in seed pearls, diamonds, and platinum, with one tassel pendant missing from the object.
Wwake's Petal uses freshwater seed pearls in a flower pattern on recycled 14K gold, while ALBISIA's Amy uses a hand-hammered ring slider above a baroque pearl drop. Set & Stones Bobbi punctuates gold-filled chain with 4mm pearls and a five-inch drop. A 14K lariat with a single 9mm freshwater cultured pearl keeps the finish spare; Ettika's Deep Drop adds graduated 12mm pearls and a nine-inch drop. House of Olia's Piedrita runs 34 inches in organic freshwater pearls and gold fill.
I would wear Piedrita against a crisp shirt and leave the neckline quiet. Check whether the pearl is a fixed terminal or one bead in a row, and whether the drop passes through a slider. What I would skip: pairing the cream tassel strand with a blouse that already has a bow or tie. Two dangling finishes compete before you leave the mirror.

Diamond and stone drops
Stone shape does more work here than the chain. The lariat's 1970s revival leaned into suede or leather, beads, and natural pendants; these pieces trade that earthy surface for a bright point of light.
Mejuri's Celeste places a diamond cluster above one small drop, while VRAI's V Duo pairs a round brilliant with a trillion cut. The two bezel-set lab diamonds on the Brilliant Earth lariat adjust to 18, 19, or 20 inches; LANA's Mini Diamond Tennis sends graduated stones down a mirror-finish 14K chain. Bony Levy's Monaco puts 13 round diamonds on an 18K Y, and 770 Fine Jewelry uses three bezel-set diamonds with a sliding adjustment.
I would let one of these sit over a V neck or under an open blazer, without a second pendant fighting for the center. Before choosing, decide whether you want a cluster, a single terminal, or a row of stones, then check the drop length and setting. What I would skip: a long drop if a high neckline or necklace stack would hide its last stone.

Silver Y shapes and drops
Silver gives the Y a little more architecture. A jeweler's guide says lariats are usually clasp-free and looped through a fixed point, but these pieces include toggles, lobster clasps, and even a spring ring. Here the closure is part of the silhouette, not a footnote.
Kendra Scott's Fate sets white cubic zirconia on rhodium-over-brass with a toggle. The Lovery's sterling silver lariat ends in a round CZ and four-inch drop; Pamela Love's Bellona mixes labradorite, cultured pearl, and black onyx. Robindira Unsworth's handmade California Y necklace uses a diamond slice, while the crisscross connector on the sterling-silver diamond lariat makes its center more graphic. John Hardy's Surf Link keeps the toggle sculptural; Surf Silver & Diamond pairs reclaimed silver with a freshwater pearl and diamonds.
I would wear a silver drop against charcoal or a black open neckline. Check the closure and listed drop length before choosing, especially if you want the Y to land at a particular point. This is the silver reading of the lariat: less about a knot, more about choosing how the line is held. What I would skip: another pendant sitting right over the crossing point. Let the connector have its own small bit of space.

Choose the closure first
I would start with how I want the line to behave: a long pearl strand if I want to tie it, a slider if I want a movable drop, or a clasped Y if I want the same shape each time. Then I would choose the material, gold for warmth, pearls for softness, diamonds for a bright center, or silver for a cooler line.
A lariat necklace works best when its drop has room to be seen, so I would check the neckline, length, and closure as one decision. A straight chain is easy to forget; a good drop has one small detail that catches the eye, then gets out of its way.
