Maison Louis Marie Fragrance: Scents Worth Knowing

Maison Louis Marie Fragrance: Scents Worth Knowing

Maison Louis Marie is the Los Angeles fragrance house Marie du Petit Thouars started in 2013, and it smells the way a quiet garden looks. I like it for scents that suit a mood instead of a moment, and this edit is my starting map.

A family history, bottled in Los Angeles

I distrust fragrance brands with a perfect origin story, so it surprised me how much I believe this one. Marie du Petit Thouars founded Maison Louis Marie in Los Angeles in 2013, after years as a fashion editor for the London Sunday Times and then a fine-art fashion photographer. She launched with six scents, and the house is named for her ancestor Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars, a French botanist who collected more than 2,000 plant specimens. Her husband Matthew Berkson runs it as CEO, and you can read the family lineage in their own words.

What wins me over is that none of this feels borrowed. It started with Marie making candles as gifts, and it grew into perfume oils, eau de parfums, diffusers and body care without ever losing the quiet, nature-led voice. The house is still fully independent, which might explain why the packaging stays so pared back and the scents never chase a trend. I went deeper on a related idea in Boy Smells Candles: The Scents Worth Knowing. I went deeper on a related idea in Abel Perfume: Which Scents Are Worth It?.

If you want one place to begin, I would start with No.04 Bois de Balincourt, the warm, woody scent Marie herself keeps returning to.

Scents for skin, rooms and a small ritual

The range makes sense to me as three small habits: something for your skin, something for your room, something to try before you commit. The No.04 Bois de Balincourt Eau de Parfum is the anchor, warm and woody and an easy first scent to live with. The No.04 Bois de Balincourt Perfume Oil gives you the same smell closer to the skin, quieter and more private.

For the house, the No.04 Bois de Balincourt Home Diffuser keeps that scent in a room, while the No.10 Aboukir Candle and the Antidris Cassis Candle are for evenings when you want light as much as fragrance. Picture a slow Sunday with the Liane de Tomate Candle burning and the No.15 Vanille Infinie Perfume Oil Mini Roller waiting in a bag for later. That is the whole ritual, and it is a nice one.

For anyone still learning the line, the Eau de Parfum Discovery Set is the sensible way in, ahead of the full No.14 Icila Eau de Parfum. What I would skip: a large bottle before your nose has decided.

A scent house with its roots outdoors

I keep coming back to the way the botanical family story gives Maison Louis Marie a real center. Marie's history, the first candle gifts and the six original scents all lead to the same close attention to place. The range now stretches from a rollerball to a room diffuser, yet it still feels personal, as if each format were one more way to keep a memory within reach.

I would begin with the smallest bottle and let your nose do the editing. Although I suspect you will end up with a candle too.
