Mens Fall Outfits: Knits, Checked Shirts and Straight Trousers

Mens Fall Outfits: Knits, Checked Shirts and Straight Trousers

Mr Porter opened its autumn edit in the first week of September, and the new arrivals are mostly knits, checked shirts and straight trousers in earthy colors. I went through the whole drop, from Mr P. sweaters to Diemme boots, and picked the pieces that make the first cold week easier. Here is where I would start.

Sweaters and Cardigans for the First Cold Morning

Mr Porter launched its new autumn edit in the first week of September 2026, covering textured jackets, checked shirts and oversized knitwear, and the retailer says new products arrive three times a week. The press has noticed. GQ ran autumn picks built from the arrivals on September 22, Esquire did the same on September 28, and The Times picked ten autumn pieces on September 15, including a navy Dries Van Noten coat and the advice that September is the time to swap light-wash denim for deep indigo. I like a season that announces itself with sweaters, so start there. Mr P. is Mr Porter's own label, launched exclusively on the site on November 7, 2017, and built around an Essentials range and a five-drop system instead of the usual seasonal releases. Forbes now ranks it among the top five brands sold there. The green cashmere and silk-blend polo sweater is the one I would pick first. Beside it, the Hartford alpaca, yak and wool-blend cardigan in gray is the layer for a cold office, and the A.PRESSE wool henley in charcoal is the quieter option. Wear any of them over a plain white tee. What I would skip is the Aimé Leon Dore striped sweatpants under a cardigan anywhere with a dress code.

Shirts, Polos and Tees for Layering

This is the biggest grid in the edit, and the checks are the reason to look. Fortela is a Milan label founded in 2015 by Alessandro Squarzi. Its name inverts the Italian phrase tela forte, meaning strong cloth, and Squarzi draws on a vintage archive of more than 10,000 pieces kept in Rimini. The Baker camp-collar checked cotton shirt in red comes straight from that taste for old workwear. Portuguese Flannel, a family business across four generations with mills around Guimaraes, supplies the Hillside checked cotton-flannel in navy, the one I would wear first. Husbands is the other name worth knowing. Nicolas Gabard practiced as an intellectual property lawyer for 20 years before opening the first Husbands boutique in Paris in 2012, and he named it after the John Cassavetes film. Its striped Supima cotton-poplin shirt in blue is the dressed-up choice. Then there are the tees. The Row Maiko in off-white comes from a label that began in 2006 with a white T-shirt that took a year and a half to perfect. What I would skip is the Human Made printed tee under any of the checked shirts, because the print and the check will compete.

Trousers and Jeans That Start the Season

The Times says September is when light-wash gives way to deep indigo, and I agree, so this grid is where the season actually changes. Acne Studios was founded in Stockholm in 1996, and in 1997 Jonny Johansson made 100 pairs of raw denim jeans with red stitching and gave them to friends and family, which is where the label's denim reputation starts. The 1981 wide-leg in blue is the pair I would choose for a first cold day. Saman Amel is a Stockholm tailoring label founded in 2015 by childhood friends Saman Amel and Dag Granath, with garments almost entirely handmade in Italy. Its straight-leg linen trousers in beige are an early-autumn pair, easy with a camp-collar shirt while the weather holds. Drake's started in London in 1977 and is best known for handmade ties, so I find the carpenter cargo in tan an interesting side step. The Mr P. brushed cotton-blend twill suit trousers in brown are the ones I would wear with the green polo sweater. My test for any trouser is whether it still looks right with a chunky boot. What I would skip is the Jeanerica Genua white jeans once the weather turns, because deep indigo is the better call by October.

Loafers, Boat Shoes, Sneakers and a Hiking Boot

This is a brown-suede grid, and I mean that as praise. Sebago was founded in 1946 in Maine and is best known for boat shoes, especially the Docksides, a 1980s American college fashion trend. The Ranger Artisan suede boat shoe in brown carries that history. Timberland's roots are in the Abington Shoe Company in Massachusetts, where Nathan Swartz bought a half-interest in 1952, and the company introduced its boot in 1973. The Authentic 3-Eye Lug boat shoe in dark brown is the sturdier of the two. Common Projects was founded in 2004 by Prathan Poopat and Flavio Girolami, and every pair carries numbers on the heel in gold foil, so the Winter Driving suede sneaker in dark brown is easy to spot if you know where to look. Diemme, founded in 1992 by the brothers Dennis and Maico Signor in Montebelluna, a town known for mountain and ski boots, makes the Cornaro Gala hiking boot in charcoal suede and leather. The Mr P. waxed-suede penny loafers in brown are the dressy end. What I would skip is the white LOEWE Grip sneaker on a wet commute, because pale nylon and a rainy pavement do not get along.

Sunglasses, a Cap, a Belt and a Backpack

A new season is easiest to start with the small things. Jacques Marie Mage was founded in 2014 by Jérôme Mage, is designed in Los Angeles and handcrafted in Japan and Italy, and makes each design in serialized batches of no more than 500 pairs. The Dealan 53 square-frame acetate sunglasses in brown are the most distinctive pair here. Garrett Leight California Optical started in Venice Beach in 2010, and its frames carry a stamp reading VC/CA 90291 as a nod to those roots. The Wells J round titanium pair in gold looks sharp with a gray knit. Our Legacy and TOTEME have quieter frames if you want something lighter. For the cap, the CELINE Triomphe cap in green comes from a house where Hedi Slimane revived the Arc de Triomphe logo in 2018. Brunello Cucinelli's 3cm suede belt in brown picks up the brown suede shoes in the grid before. The visvim CORDURA nylon backpack in black is the practical carry-all. Hiroki Nakamura founded visvim in Tokyo in 2000. What I would skip is the Saint Laurent striped silk-twill tie with a sweater and sneakers, because it only makes sense next to a collar and a jacket.

A Shopping Order for the First Cold Week

The point of a first look is to avoid buying everything at once. If I were starting this edit from scratch, I would go in this order: one good sweater, one checked flannel, a pair of brown trousers and deep indigo jeans, and one suede shoe that handles rain. After that, add the sunglasses and the belt. New things arrive three times a week, so the second look can fill whatever the first one missed. Keep the palette earthy. Brown, green, navy and charcoal all sit well together here, which means every sweater goes with every trouser and the whole drop works as one wardrobe rather than twelve separate ideas. Wear the Mr P. polo sweater under an open flannel shirt, with the brown twill trousers and the suede loafers, and you have the entire season in one outfit. Then do the sensible thing and let it get cold before adding anything else.

More Shirts, Tees and Trousers From the Same Drop

Once the first cold week is sorted, I like to fill the gaps with the pieces that sit between the knits and the coats. I would start with shirts: the Mr P. moleskin shirt and the Human Made Souvenir poplin shirt for something lighter. Underneath, the CELINE and Acne Studios jersey tees keep it simple. For the bottom half, the Mr P. pleated cashmere-blend trousers and the Canali tapered twill pair sit well next to the KAPITAL Monkey Cisco jeans. The A.P.C. Hector striped sweater and the KAPITAL striped polo add a little pattern, and the LOEWE raffia-trimmed loafers and Common Projects sneakers finish the outfit. What I would skip: the rimless Loewe Eyewear aviators on an overcast morning, since they suit brighter days.
