Métier bags are the logo-free Italian-made leather and suede totes, shoulder bags and clutches from a London label founded in 2017. I picked the shapes I would reach for this fall, plus a few quiet cousins from other makers.
Métier Bags: The Logo-Free Leather London Quietly Carries

Quiet bags with a London address
In 2017, a Philadelphia-born designer named Melissa Morris launched a leather goods label in London. She had studied sculpture, then trained in the ateliers of Armani and Helmut Lang, and she built Métier on a plain idea: luxury as an exquisite kind of utility. That is the whole appeal of Métier bags, and it is why I keep coming back to them in October, when the coat gets heavy and the bag has to do real work.
Morris has said she created the brand because she could not find what she was looking for in the market. The logo is tiny enough to blink and miss, and she describes her clients as people with plenty to say and nothing to prove. There is no monogram to decode. The shape, the leather and the hardware do the talking, and the construction happens in Italy, in Florence and Naples.
So where would I start. The Tilt 22 in black calf, with its curved top handle and lobster clasp, is the one I would reach for on a weekday with a wool coat. The Tilt 16 in cream is the small, dressier sibling. For work, the Private Eye tote comes two ways: ecru linen with brown buffalo leather, or black diamond-quilted lamb. Both have a detachable shoulder strap, which matters on a commute.
If you want softness, look at the Vérité City in tan suede or emerald, and the Incognito 36 in chocolate suede, which has slip pockets outside and in. My tip: open every zip and clasp on your hand before you decide. A bag you fight with at the turnstile is the wrong bag, however good the leather.

Shoulder and crossbody bags, in real colors
Métier is known for the discreet logo, but Morris has also talked about the way a bag is organized inside, and the shoulder styles show it. The Roma, the one the Duchess of Cambridge is said to favor, has hidden pockets and takes its cue from La Dolce Vita. Here you get it in black silk-satin with a twist-lock flap, which is the one I would pick for dinners that run late.
For daily use, the Parallel 22 is a flip-lock flap bag with a detachable strap. I like the red calf leather version because it is unlined and light, and the black suede one because it is fully lined with internal slip, sleeve and zip pockets. The Stowaway is the compact option: striped canvas and leather in black, or a bright jade nubuck with a twist-lock. The Tilt 22 comes in midnight blue textured leather and in brown suede with a leather strap.
Check the strap first. Clip it, unclip it, and wear it crossbody over your thickest sweater. Then close the clasp one-handed, because you will do that on a train platform with a coffee in the other hand. If you want something that looks like jewelry, the light blue Roma Mini with the Fernando Jorge embellished lock and chain strap is the dressy outlier.
What I would skip: the pale suede in a rainy week. Black suede forgives more, and a light brush when it dries keeps the nap even.

Totes that hold a laptop and a weekend
Métier says its bags are tested in a facility that simulates 20 years of use, according to British Vogue, and the totes are where that claim gets used hardest. Totes carry the heaviest loads, so I look at how the handles are attached and how the base holds its shape.
The Incognito is the name to know. The Incognito Cabas in black calf leather has a suede lining and a zip along the top, and the Incognito 42 Cabas comes in tan suede with slot pockets on the front and back. Next to them, the Market Weekend in black has a twisted base and a removable zipped pouch, which I would use for chargers and a passport. The Weekend XL in tan suede with leather trim is the one for an actual weekend away, at 48cm wide.
For warmer days, or a trip somewhere sunny, the Chameleon in white jacquard (41) and cream canvas with dark buffalo handles (34) are lighter in mood. The Vérité All Day comes in white sand calf leather and in woven straw with black buffalo trim.
Fill it before you commit. Put in a laptop, a water bottle and a coat, then lift it by one handle. If it slumps hard to one side, size down. What I would skip: the white leather as your only commuter bag. It will tell on you by November.

Clutches, pouches and the small evening bags
Small bags are where the brand's design habits get easy to see. The same leathers show up, but now there is room to notice the hardware. The flat Leather Clutch in burgundy has a gold diamond twist lock, and the burgundy Textured-Leather Pouch closes with a magnetic flap over three internal compartments, so a phone, a card and lipstick each get a place.
The Ease is the clutch I would build an evening around. It comes in dark brown suede with a turn-lock and a detachable strap that adjusts from 45 to 60cm, and in black quilted leather with a twist-lock. The Edge is a small top-handle clutch with a magnetic flap, in camel suede or black nubuck. Both feel like something you would hold at a gallery opening rather than swing around.
The Fernando Jorge collaboration pieces are the ones with sparkle. The Ease in ivory glossed leather has a chain-trimmed strap, and the Stowaway in black patent has three internal slip pockets and an Alcantara lining.
The test: stand in front of a mirror with the strap off, then on. A clutch should look like it belongs in your hand, and a strap should not drag the shape out of line. What I would skip: the ivory glossed leather if you plan to toss it into a larger tote.

Understated leather from other makers
Métier is not the only label doing this kind of quiet. Once you like a bag with no logo, you start noticing who else keeps it plain, and the shapes in this group are close cousins. Several are made in Italy, like Métier's own, which makes them easy to cross-shop by hand.
The Row is the obvious one. The Marlo 12 is a small chocolate calf tote with herringbone canvas lining, and the Dalia is a slim black leather zip-top with a single top handle, 27cm wide. Khaite brings a little more attitude: the Olivia Mini is a slim yellow suede top-handle, and the Joan Small is black calf leather with a lobster clasp. Totême's Roam is a tall brown leather tote, and the Palmellato is a black shoulder bag with a T-bar top. Savette's Soft Symmetry is a soft black top-handle with a silver push-clasp, and the Trapeze Large is a big black shoulder bag with gold hardware.
My pairing idea is to put one of these beside a Métier shape in the same color, and see which silhouette suits your coat. Check the lining and the edge finishing on each, since that is where plain bags show their quality.
What I would skip: buying three black bags in the same size. Vary the size, the strap and the finish.

The bag I would pick up first
If I were choosing, I would decide the job first. A commute means the Private Eye or an Incognito tote. A dinner means the Roma or an Ease clutch. A weekend means the Weekend XL. Then I would pick the color that works with the coat I actually own, and open every closure on my hand.
Morris built her label so the bag does the quiet work. I like that a brand with a tiny logo you could blink and miss has still made it into so many wardrobes, from Succession to the Duchess's arm. Have plenty to say, carry nothing that needs to prove it. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Coach Bags Quietly Became the Leather Goods Everyone Actually Uses and Polène Bag Dupe.
