Micaela Erlanger Style: Fall and Winter Pieces With Red Carpet Storytelling

The stylist behind Lupita Nyong’o’s red carpet story inspires a winter edit of shaped outerwear, tactile knits, bags and eveningwear.

Micaela Erlanger’s styling for Lupita Nyong’o moves from a Ralph Lauren cape to custom Chanel. Shop fall and winter coats, knits, bags and evening pieces.

Micaela Erlanger’s style story begins with collaboration

Micaela Erlanger is a New York City celebrity stylist whose decade-long partnership with Lupita Nyong’o began during the 12 Years a Slave press run. Her clients have also included Meryl Streep, Diane Kruger, Common and Michelle Dockery.

She started on the editorial side and spent six years working with mentor Annabel Tollman. The Hollywood Reporter has repeatedly named her among its most powerful stylists since 2013, and her book How to Accessorize brings her attention to the finishing details.

Her designer references reward a story told across looks

Ralph Lauren’s red cape gown, styled on Lupita Nyong’o, is a famous starting point, with Gucci and Stella McCartney among the other labels in that awards-season mix. Years later, Erlanger and Nyong’o shaped a custom Chanel gown for the 2025 Oscars.

Her 2026 awards-season mood board looked to McQueen and Schiaparelli for clean shapes with old-Hollywood drama. I follow that storytelling with sculpted outerwear, tactile knits, bags and shoes, then evening pieces with a clear silhouette.

Where I would start with Micaela Erlanger’s style

I would start with a shaped coat, then let one knit carry the texture. Add a compact bag or a tall boot for a deliberate finish. For an evening out, trade the knit for one dress with a clear silhouette.
