Michael S. Smith home fabrics blend historic references with a modern point of view

Michael S. Smith launched his Los Angeles design firm in 1990, after studying interior design at Otis College of Art and Design and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. His biography also notes his work in the antiques trade, a thread I can feel in rooms that balance historic pieces with contemporary art.

The Jasper Collection he designs spans furniture, fabrics, leathers, wallcoverings and accessories. In 2026, Zoffany presented his archival patterns as 14 outdoor-friendly fabric designs, including Winter Garden, Thorny Vine and Filigree Bellagio Stripe.

Michael S. Smith’s interiors earned industry recognition and a place in print

Smith has been named to Architectural Digest’s AD100 seven times and received the Pacific Design Center’s Stars of Design honor. In 2010, President Obama appointed him to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House.

Rizzoli published his book Classic by Design on October 8, 2024, with a foreword by Shonda Rhimes. I love returning to the rooms through the book, then looking at these Zoffany patterns as a way to bring one part of that design language into the home.

Where I would start with Michael S. Smith’s interiors

Begin with one pattern family, then let a stripe or woven ground give it room. Winter Garden is a good starting point for expressive florals, while Summerhouse Weave offers a quieter counterpoint. Keep the rest of the room grounded in natural materials and art you care about.
