Military jackets are getting a soft edge, keeping useful details like patch pockets instead of a rigid silhouette. I go through field and utility jackets from FRAME and Tna, and how a little structure beats stiffness.

Military Jackets With A Soft Edge
A little structure, less stiffness
The sharpest utility jackets are loosening up. Instead of a rigid military silhouette, the current versions borrow the useful details, patch pockets, a drawstring waist, a short field shape, then soften them with cotton poplin, cotton twill, or a cropped proportion that works in an actual commute. The appeal is practical: pockets reduce the need for a crowded bag, and a defined shoulder can make a simple jersey dress look considered without adding much heat. FRAME The Short Field belted cotton-twill jacket gives the waist a clear line, while the Tna Jasper Field Jacket keeps the field reference more relaxed and easy to layer. Wear either over a narrow knit and straight-leg trousers, then push the sleeves up once the day warms. Utility jackets can look fussy when every fastening is doing the talking, and a very short cut is less forgiving with low-rise bottoms. Choose one strong detail, such as a belt or a patch pocket, and let the rest of the outfit provide the quiet.

Our honest take
This category works because it carries some of a blazer's structure without asking for blazer-level formality. Cotton twill feels more substantial than a shirt but less sealed-in than leather, which makes it a sensible bridge through shifting temperatures. The softer field shapes are also kinder to relaxed denim and sneakers, while a belted version can hold its own beside a midi skirt or a low heel. There is a limit, though. Too many pockets, straps, and contrast panels can make the jacket read like costume rather than clothing, especially when paired with cargo trousers. Keep the palette restrained and make the jacket the only utility reference in the outfit. If you take one thing away, choose the shape that gives your waist and shoulders definition without restricting the layers underneath. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Lululemon Dupes and Layering Jackets, Vests.
