Miu Miu Guide: Playful Pieces From Every Corner of the Label

Miuccia Prada launched Miu Miu in 1993 and named it after her family nickname. A lot of you search for miumiu as one word, and what you are usually after is that mix of schoolgirl and slightly off that Miuccia Prada built it on. The first collection was cowgirl themed, all fringed suede jackets and patchwork prairie skirts, and the label has been her place for the less serious ideas ever since. It has shown in Paris since 2006, and in 2022 Lyst named it brand of the year after one very short pleated skirt took over the internet. What I like is that Miu Miu never looks like it is trying too hard to be grown up.

 

The bags are where I would start. The Aventure comes four ways here, in nappa, as a small leather shoulder bag, as a mini and as a small canvas tote, and its soft, slightly crumpled leather is the house signature. The Spirit is the more structured one, in nappa or a small suede. The Arcadie is a small top-handle with a ladylike frame, the Vivant is a soft lambskin bag, and the Utilitaire shopping bag and the Pocket bag are the practical ones with outside pockets. The Utilitaire and Pocket bags come in a few leathers, and the Hobo and the Beau add two more shapes. The canvas backpack is the most casual thing in the grid, and the small leather shoulder bag is the one I would wear every day.

 

What I would skip: the mini Aventure as an everyday bag. It holds a phone, a card case and not much more.

The Wander was one of the bags that made Miu Miu feel everywhere again in 2022, along with the strapped ballet flats and that miniskirt, and it is still the one I see most. Its quilted matelassé leather and round top handle look sweet without being twee. This second grid has a small Wander top-handle, plus the Arcadie in matelassé nappa, which uses the same quilting on a framed shape.

 

The Vivant shows up in suede, in leather and as a bowling bag, and it is the softest bag here. The Rendez-vous is a good shoulder bag for work, the Adventure tote is the one for a laptop, and the Caprice clutch and the velvet pouch are for evenings. The Ivy comes as a shoulder bag, a leather tote and a small lurex tote. The leather shoulder bag is the plain one, and the nappa mini bag and the gabardine mini bag are for the days you only need the basics.

 

My test for a soft bag is to put your usual things inside and hold it up by one handle. If it folds in on itself, you will be digging for your keys all day.

 

What I would skip: velvet in a rainy city. It marks easily.

For most of its first two decades Miu Miu was strongest in footwear, and the ballet flat with a strap across the foot became one of the most copied shoes of the early 2020s. The leather Mary Jane flats, the Ruches suede Mary Janes, the ballet slipper flats and the mesh ballet flats all come from that idea, and the mesh pair is my pick for summer. The crocheted, canvas, shearling, net, velvet and buckled flannel flats rework the same shape in other fabrics.

 

The penny loafers and the Mary Jane loafers are the more practical side, sturdy and easy with jeans. For warm weather there are the Tyre leather-trimmed sandals, snake-effect sandals, crochet sandals and satin slides, and the suede clogs sit somewhere between seasons. The leather-detailed flannel slingback pumps have a low heel and a leather toe cap, which makes them the dressiest thing in the grid, with the black bow slingback pumps close behind.

 

A pairing tip: wear the flats with a thin sock once it gets cold. It keeps them going into November, and it looks deliberate rather than practical.

 

What I would skip: the satin slides for long walks. They are made for dinner, not the commute.

This is the grid for shoes you can actually walk in. The woven penny loafers are good with straight trousers, and the suede loafer flats are the softest loafer here. The suede boat shoes, the leather and suede boat shoes and the lace-up leather boat shoes are a very Miu Miu take on a preppy shoe, a little off and better for it, and the leather lace-up loafers are the most classic thing here.

 

The shearling clogs and the shearling-lined platform mules are for cold mornings, and the Sabot metallic mules, Plume suede mules, suede loafer mules and kitten-heel mesh mules are easy slip-ons for the rest of the year. For summer there are slingback leather sandals, leather fisherman sandals and thong sandals.

 

My test for a loafer is to walk down a flight of stairs. If your heel lifts out on the way down, go half a size smaller.

 

What I would skip: the metallic mules if you want one pair to wear constantly. The shine wears off the toe first.

Miu Miu started working with New Balance in 2022 on a deconstructed 574, and the partnership took off in 2024 with the thin-soled 530 SL. It helped make flat, low sneakers the shape of the moment, and you can see that idea all through this grid. The Tyre sneakers, the nylon and suede sneakers, the Gymnasium in tech nylon and suede and the snake-effect nylon pair are all slim and low. The Plume comes in satin, leather-trimmed and suede-trimmed versions, and it is the sweetest of them.

 

For something bigger, there are leather platform sneakers, platform mule sneakers, crystal-embellished Allacciate sneakers and a shearling-lined low top. The boots are the tall leather boots, the leather knee boots, suede ankle boots and a paneled knitted suede ankle boot, which is the most unusual one here.

 

A pairing tip: slim sneakers look best with a skirt, or with wide trousers that brush the top of the shoe.

 

What I would skip: crystal sneakers for travel. They snag on everything.

The spring 2022 show is the one everyone remembers: pleated miniskirts cut so short the pocket linings showed, cropped sweaters and a lot of stomach. Miuccia Prada called the collection Basic Instincts, and what made it work was that she took the most normal clothes and cut them slightly wrong. That is still the Miu Miu idea, and it runs through this grid.

 

The pleated checked wool mini skirt is the closest piece to that moment. The brushed wool cardigan in bright chartreuse and the argyle cashmere cardigan are the knits I would buy first, and the cropped cotton cardigan is the lighter version. For trousers there are corduroy wide-legs and mohair-wool pants. The waxed suede midi skirt is the grown-up piece, the ruffled satin midi and the lace collar dress are for evenings, and the checked poplin minidress is for summer. A logo plaid shirt, a cotton poplin shirt, a poplin shirt jacket, the crocheted cotton jacket, a striped bandeau and the New Balance crop top fill it out.

 

My test: wear one Miu Miu piece at a time. A cardigan with plain jeans says more than a full look.

 

What I would skip: the bandeau for anything outdoors. It slips.

Miu Miu has made short films with women directors since 2011 under the name Women's Tales, with entries from Ava DuVernay and Agnès Varda among others, and the clothes always look like costumes for a character. This grid feels like that to me, a wardrobe for a slightly eccentric girl in a boarding-school film.

 

The outerwear is fleece and corduroy: a plaid cropped fleece, a gingham fleece and an oversized corduroy blouson. The Fair Isle wool cardigan and the striped zip-up sweatshirt are the cozy middle layer. The dresses are mostly short, the Costina, an embroidered cotton and linen mini, a leather-trimmed jersey mini and an embroidered silk mini, and the Vichy check and poplin miniskirts keep the theme going. For tops there is a cashmere top, two jersey tees, a puff-sleeve piqué wrap top and an open-back knit bodysuit. The brushed wool vest, the poplin shirt and the poplin midi skirt are the quiet pieces, and the shearling-lined tech-fabric blouson is the warmest layer.

 

My test for a short dress is to sit down in front of a mirror. If you are tugging at the hem, size up or wear it over trousers.

 

What I would skip: the open-back bodysuit unless you already know you love one. It is hard to wear with a bra.

Once the cardigans and miniskirts are covered, Miu Miu clothing turns to outerwear and polos. The jackets are where the label's habit of treating sportswear as something precious shows most clearly: the fleece zipper jacket, the fleece down jacket, the fleece zippered hoodie jacket and the checked teddy zipper jacket, plus the cropped ripstop down jacket and the medium-weight ripstop down coat for real cold.

 

For dressing up there is the single-breasted double wool coat, the reversible twill and houndstooth check trench coat, and the long satin dress, which is the one evening piece in the row. The Sablé dress, the Panama cotton dress and the slubbed poplin and eyelet lace mini-dress are lighter, and the stretch jersey midi-dress is the easiest to wear on an ordinary Tuesday. The Cady Sangallo dress and the Piuma Carta jacket, pant and dress are the dressier end of the FWRD pieces.

 

The small pieces do the daily work. The piqué polo shirt, the wool knit polo and the cotton jersey polo T-shirt are what I would wear under a cardigan, and the cashmere cardigan vest and V-neck wool cardigan are the knits to start with. The washed denim mini-skirt and the cropped washed denim jacket make a quiet pair, and the checked teddy miniskirt is the louder one. The check color shirt and skirt come as a ready-made set.

 

My test: stand an arm's length from a mirror. If one logo reads and nothing else competes with it, the outfit is right.

 

What I would skip: the fleece mini skirt, unless you own a coat long enough to cover the gap in winter.

Accessories are the easiest way into Miu Miu, and the house is very good at the small, slightly silly ones. For winter this grid has shearling mittens, shearling earmuffs with the logo on the side, a ribbed cashmere-wool beret, a striped knitted cotton hat and a cashmere-wool scarf in a strong cobalt blue that loops through itself. The silk twill scarf is the lighter one for spring.

 

For jewelry there are oversized earrings, enameled metal earrings, plain metal earrings and floral crystal drop earrings, and the enameled hair clip is a small way to wear the logo. The crystal belt is the evening piece, and it looks great over a plain knit dress. The last row is a few pieces I could not leave out: the studded pouch bag and the satin maxi dress for evenings, plus a double-faced wool mini dress and the tech-nylon flares.

 

My test for a beret is to wear it pushed back, not pulled down to the eyebrows. It looks less like a costume.

 

What I would skip: the earmuffs if you wear headphones every day. You will end up choosing one.

If I were starting from nothing, I would buy a pair of flats first, because shoes were Miu Miu's strength long before the miniskirt, and a good pair goes with everything. Then a cardigan, because that is where the house's knitwear sense shows best. A bag can come later, and the Wander or the Aventure is the one to wait for.

 

The thing to remember with Miu Miu is that it works best as one odd piece in an otherwise plain outfit. Let the shoe or the cardigan do the work, keep the rest simple, and it looks like you rather than a costume.
