How I Layer Mine

The necklaces worth buying are the ones that give an outfit a point of focus without making the neckline impossible to style. I think about necklaces in four layers: a chain for line, a pendant for direction, a drop for movement and a stone or shell for colour. You do not need all four at once. Most bad layering comes from treating every piece as equally important. Start with the neckline, then choose one dominant shape and let the other pieces sit quietly around it. I would choose a chain or pendant I can wear often rather than a novelty charm that only works with one top. Below, the necklaces I would put together, grouped by the kind of line or detail they bring to an outfit.

Label Love: Ettika

Ettika offers jewellery with a point of view. The range runs from the Molten Turquoise Necklace to the Liquid Lux Bolo Lariat Necklace, with enough variety to make the label useful rather than repetitive. I would look first at the All Knowing Eye Crystal Necklace and the Hanging By A Moment Necklace, because they show the two most convincing sides of the collection. The signature is a strong proportion with one memorable detail, not a pile of decoration. I would choose the Molten Turquoise Necklace for a practical option and the Liquid Lux Bolo Lariat Necklace when the outfit needs more presence. Check that the clasp sits at the back without twisting, because a good idea still has to work in real clothes.

Chains

A chain is the piece I wear most, because it draws a line without asking anything of the outfit. Loren Stewart's Serpentine Chain and petit moments' Snake Chain lie flat and catch the light, which makes them the easiest to layer. Lili Claspe's Andi Bezel Chain and Shashi's Pear Diamond Chain add a small sparkle, and Roxanne Assoulin's Andiamo Link is the playful one. Gorjana's Crew Mini Link and Florence Pearl Chain and Madewell's Mini Carabiner Puffy Box Chain are the easy everyday links, and Kenneth Jay Lane's Silver Crystal Tube is the one for evening.

For something heavier, AGMES's Ilona Sterling Silver Necklace and Chan Luu's Horsebit Necklace have real weight, and Chan Luu's Discus Long Necklace is the one for a plain sweater. Dévé's Roulement à Billes No. 2 takes its name from a ball bearing and is the most unusual chain here. My test is simple: wear it with a crewneck and with an open collar. If it works with both, it is the right length.

Charms And Pendants

I choose one pendant with a clear outline and give it room. Joseph's Bean pendant and AGMES's Ada Sterling Silver Onyx Pendant are the quiet ones, Dries Van Noten's Enamel Pendant brings colour, and Louis Abel's Noema is the one I would wear every day.

Charms are where you can be personal. SARAH CHLOE's Mini Padlock Initial Charm and petit moments' Horoscope Charm carry a letter or a sign, and Jane Win's LOVE Coin Pendant says exactly what it means. Chloé's Château Treasures and Gabriela Hearst's Charm Necklace put several charms on one chain, as do Roxanne Assoulin's Multi Charm and Cult Gaia's Astrid. Aliita's Casita Esmeralda and MÉGA's Omega 4 are the most graphic. Clare V.'s Gigi Charm Necklace, Madewell's Polka Dot Stone Heart Charm, Luv Aj's Antoinette Stone Charm Necklace Set and Roxanne Assoulin's Puffy Initial are the lighter ones. What I would skip: two charm necklaces at once. One is a story, two is noise.

Drops And Danglers

A drop moves when you do, so I choose movement over weight. Julietta's Pearl Drop Gold Necklace and petit moments' Pearl Drop Lariat are the soft ones, and By Adina Eden's Teardrop Drop Lariat is the version for a deep V. Toteme has two, the Crystal Drop Necklace and the Rhodium-Plated Rope Lariat, which hangs long over a black knit.

Heaven Mayhem's Julia Long Pendant and Loren Stewart's Modernist Cord Pendant sit lower on the body, and Louis Abel's Dona is the one with the most shape. Juju Vera's La Isla Sun Lighter Pendant is the playful one. Test any drop with the exact neckline you plan to wear: it should land on skin or fabric, never on a seam.

Stones And Shells

Here I let one family of colour or texture lead. Anni Lu's Shell On A String and Lovers and Friends' Jordan Shell Necklace are the beach ones, and RENATA.Q's Tigri Seashell Necklace is the dressier take. Shashi's Bennet Gemstone and Jade Carnelian necklaces, petit moments' Emerald Necklace and NAiiA's Turquoise Bolo bring stone colour. For pearls, Bolola's Lola Pearl Necklace and Lizzie Fortunato's Milano Pearl Necklace in Horn are where I would start.

Further down, the grid moves into fine jewellery, from Lizzie Mandler's Éclat Diamond Station Necklace to Amrapali's Mini Rajasthan emerald necklace and DEZSO by Sara Beltrán's Carved Capri Shell. Those are heirloom pieces, so read the metal and stone details carefully. What I would skip: turquoise, coral and pearl in one stack. Pick one.

Style Notes

My practical rule for a necklace is to test the part that will annoy you first. Sit, walk and reach, then check the clasp and the length against the neckline before thinking about the photograph. I would rather buy one piece that works with the clothes already in the wardrobe than several options that need a new outfit around them. Store delicate chains and shells with space so they do not tangle. The honest measure is whether you stop adjusting it once you leave the house. I would wear the Tide Coin Necklace every day and save the Jade Necklace for dinners. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together How to Layer Necklaces Without Tangling Them and Snake Chain Necklaces.
