Non Toxic Nail Polish, and What the Labels Really Mean

Non Toxic Nail Polish, and What the Labels Really Mean

Non toxic nail polish is a marketing phrase, so I read the claims closely. Here are eight polishes from eight brands that use free-from labels, plus eight base coats, top coats, removers and cuticle picks to go with them.

Magazine-style product test page with five cut-out products and a best-for note on each: Olive & June Long-Lasting Nail Polish; Zoya Nail Lacquer; OPI Nature Strong Nail Polish; Nails.INC It's Topless 4-in-1 Base Coat, Treatment, Color and Top Coat 1-Step Gel Nail Polish; OPI Nature Strong Base Nail Coat

What Three-Free Meant, and Didn't

Shopping for non toxic nail polish starts with a bit of history. According to a peer-reviewed review on PubMed Central, the European Union banned DBP in cosmetics in 2004, and in 2006 US companies began voluntarily labeling their polish as 3-Free. The three are dibutyl phthalate, toluene and formaldehyde, which OSHA and California regulators call the toxic trio. The same review notes that labeling a nail product 3-Free does not need premarket approval from the FDA, so it is a marketing term and not a legal standard.

That matters, because claims are not always accurate. When California's Department of Toxic Substances Control tested seven products that claimed to be three-free, only two tested that way, and five contained high levels of DBP, toluene or both. The tiers kept growing after that. By one definition 5-Free also leaves out formaldehyde resin and camphor, and 7-Free adds ethyl tosylamide and xylene, but the numbers vary by brand and there is no standard.

So I treat these labels as a starting point. I look for a brand that tells you what it leaves out, and I read the list.

People wear this kind of polish in a few ways right now: a sheer peachy-pink glow, a glossy raspberry tint, a classic red, a soft neutral, or a gel-like one-step color. The first grid is eight polishes, one from each brand. The second grid is the base coats, top coats, removers and cuticle care. My tip: check the free-from list on the box, not just the front claim.

One Polish Each From Eight Brands

Manucurist Active Glow in Raspberry is a treatment polish with a peachy-pink glow tint and a glass-like shine. It has raspberry extract, sweet almond oil and AHAs, and it is the one I would choose if you want a sheer, nourishing finish and not a thick opaque coat.

Olive & June Long-Lasting Nail Polish in Hot Strawberry says it wears up to 10 days with no lamp, and it is the most reviewed polish in this grid. Sally Hansen good. kind. pure. in Peony For Your Thoughts is described as plant-based, 100% vegan and 16-free, with no formaldehyde, toluene, xylene, acetone, phthalates, camphor or parabens. OPI Nature Strong in Shore Is Something is vegan, 9-free and cruelty-free, with a natural origin lacquer and up to 7 days of wear.

Zoya Nail Lacquer in Sophia comes from the brand that calls itself the first Big 10 Free, breathable polish made for long wear on natural nails. Londontown's Lakur Enhanced Colour Nail Polish is a gel-like polish that has no ratings yet, so go in with open eyes. Nails.INC It's Topless in Sabrina is a 4-in-1 formula with built-in base coat, treatment, color and top coat, and a wide hugging brush. Tenoverten's Anne has just one review, so I would call it a promising unknown.

What I would skip: Tenoverten and Londontown if you only want a polish with plenty of reviews behind it. Start with the proven ones.

Base Coats, Removers and Cuticle Care

A clean polish still needs a good base. OPI Nature Strong Base Nail Coat is vegan, at least 65% natural origin and made with post-consumer recycled materials in the bottle and cap. Its matching OPI Nature Strong Topcoat has the same plant-based, vegan formula with up to 7 days of wear. Olive & June Long Lasting Top Coat is the other seal here, with a super-shiny finish for up to 10 days.

Zoya Naked Manicure Naked Base Coat is a nutrient-rich formula with vitamins, proteins and botanicals meant to refine the nail surface and treat damage while it primes. I like it for nails that have been through gel.

Removal is the step people forget. Olive & June's Acetone Free Nail Polish Remover Pot is a dip pot with a soft foam center, so there are no cotton pads. Zoya Remove+ is a 3-in-1 remover, nail prep and conditioner, and Londontown Conditioning Lacquer Remover Wipes are pre-soaked for travel.

Finish with Olive & June Cuticle Serum, a lightweight, non-greasy click pen with a foam tip. Use it after removal, when the skin is thirstiest.

What I would skip: leaving the pot or wipes in a hot car, and scrubbing hard on stubborn glitter. Soak for a moment, then wipe once.

Read the List, Then Paint

I think the honest answer on non toxic nail polish is that no label settles it for you, which is why the ingredient list matters more than the number. Choose a brand that is clear about what it leaves out, pair it with a base coat and a gentle remover, and look after your cuticles. Everything else is color. If you like glossy and low effort, begin with a sheer pink and see how you feel after a week.
