On Running Shoes: Which Cloud Styles to Know

On Running Shoes: Which Cloud Styles to Know

On is the Swiss running label that began with a retired athlete and a few pieces of garden hose glued to a sole. I like that you can still see the idea in every shoe, and this edit is for wearing it well beyond the track.

A Swiss running idea with a visible signature

I understand On better when I start with the shoe and not the slogan. Retired athlete Olivier Bernhard wanted a different feel underfoot, and a prototype built with pieces of garden hose on the outsole led to CloudTec, the system behind cushioned landings and forceful take-offs. Caspar Coppetti and David Allemann joined him in 2010, and the three of them built the brand around Zurich and the Swiss Alps. The origin story is wonderfully physical: an athlete asks a question and the answer ends up visible on the bottom of the shoe. You can read more in On's own story.

That link between use and shape still guides how I read the label. On now makes footwear and apparel for running, outdoor, training, tennis and ordinary days, and Roger Federer joined as a co-entrepreneur in 2019. What interests me is not a claim that every Cloud suits every foot, but that the shoe asks you to think about how you land, then pick the silhouette that fits your day.

Cloud shoes for miles and the rest of the day

The cushioned outsole is the clue I look for first. The Cloud 6 Sneaker and Cloudnova 2 Sneaker keep that look easy to read for everyday wear, while the Cloudtilt Sneaker and Cloudtilt Arc Sneaker make a cleaner city profile. For training days I would compare the Cloudrunner 3 Sneaker with the Cloud X 5 Sneaker by what you actually do in them, and the Cloudmonster 1 New Edition Sneaker and Cloudmonster Void New Edition Sneaker read bolder under a straighter trouser.

Picture her taking the long way home after a morning run in the Cloudnova X Sneaker, then packing the Cloud 6 Coast Sneaker for a weekend away. One practical test: try any running pair late in the day, with your usual socks, and leave room for toes to spread. The X Ftk Twigs Cloudmonster 3 Mule is the playful off-duty pick, and the Cloud 6 Waterproof Sneaker is the one I would look at first for wet weather.

Layers that move past the track

This side of On is what happens when training clothes are expected to live beyond the workout. The Club Hoodie and Club Boxy-T are easy anchors, while the X Fka Twigs Studio Long Sleeve Tee and Studio Bra give a closer base for a class or warm-up. I would put the Club Collective 1/4 Zip beside the Performance Volt Jacket for a cold commute, and reach for the Ascent Fleece Jacket when I want something softer.

Picture her leaving an early class in the Studio Bra, slipping the Club Hoodie over it, and pulling on Performance Tights Lumos for the walk home. What I would skip: buying a full look at once. Decide whether you need a base layer or outerwear first, because the jackets solve different mornings.

A product question that still holds up

On has grown a lot, and I still find the founding idea easy to spot. I like that the story keeps coming back to a runner's question: what if the landing felt different. That is a better shopping filter than a logo, and it is how I would choose a pair here, by how I move and not by what looks loudest. Although I suspect the mule would sneak into the cart regardless.
