Ottolinger is a Berlin label with a Swiss start. Christa Bösch and Cosima Gadient met at the Basel School of Design, moved to Berlin and founded the brand in 2016. The name is an accident of the mailbox: it belonged to a neighbor on the doorbell of their first Berlin studio, where they had their mail delivered. Their first collection won the VFiles Runway competition, which led to two shows in New York. The label is known for deconstruction, and early work used raw materials treated with a Bunsen burner and sanded fabric surfaces. The tops here show how that reads in a wardrobe. The Donut Exo T-shirt, the Pink Donut Exo Tank Top and the Padded Donut T-shirt in Dark Navy share a sculpted shape, while the Black Pierced Fitted T-shirt and the Deconstructed Knit Tee keep the raw-edged idea closer to the surface. The Linen Sweatpant, the Picnic Raider Short and the Boxershort are the easy end, and the Orange and Gray Textured Knit Team Shorts are the playful one. The Surfboard Bikini Set and the Gray Strapped Business Midi Skirt are the oddest pieces here, and both are very much in the Ottolinger spirit. A useful test for leggings in a city outfit: pair them with something oversized on top, such as a boxy blazer or hoodie. The Faux-Pearl Drop Earrings and the Bow Pearl Earring take a familiar romantic shape and make it more awkward, while the Chandelier Dip Earrings, the Dipped Otto Heart Necklace and the Diamond Dip Necklace use the dipped finish that gives the line its glossy look. The Gold and Black Heart Earrings are simple and graphic. Two bags round out the group: the Black PU Beach Tote and the Blue Signature Ceramic Bag, which is the more unusual of the two.
