Ouai Detox Shampoo is Jen Atkin's clarifying wash for buildup from dry shampoo, hard water and styling products. Here it is with Ouai's scalp scrubs and serum and eight other clarifying shampoos, most from stylist-founded brands.
Ouai Detox Shampoo and the Clarifying Washes That Reset Your Hair

Every few weeks my hair stops behaving. It goes limp at the roots, the ends feel coated and nothing I put on it seems to do anything, and the reason is almost always product buildup. Jen Atkin, the stylist who founded Ouai in 2016 and named it for the casual French yeah, made Ouai Detox Shampoo for exactly that. It is a clarifying wash meant to lift away dry shampoo, styling products and the film that hard water leaves behind, and I use it once a week at most. Atkin has said she sent formulas back to the lab many times before launch, and this one has the feel of something that was fussed over: it lathers well, rinses clean and does not leave my hair squeaky. The first row is the Ouai scalp routine around it. The two sugar scrubs exfoliate buildup from the scalp and smooth dry skin on the body, one of them in the St. Barts scent, and the hydrating scalp serum balances the scalp afterward. Scrub first, then shampoo, then serum on the roots.

Four stylists, four clarifiers
Almost every brand in the second row was started by a hairstylist, and it shows in how seriously they take a clean scalp. Chris McMillan, the stylist behind The Rachel, launched his line in 2025, and his clarifying treatment uses menthol and peppermint for a cool tingle, which he describes as double cleansing for the scalp. Fenty Hair arrived in June 2024 with nine products for a range of textures, and The Clear Thinker is its detox wash. Act+Acre comes from the Irish stylist and trichologist Helen Reavey, who cold processes her formulas instead of heating them, and its shampoo is designed for hard water. Oribe was co-founded by the stylist Oribe Canales, and The Cleanse cleans deeply without stripping natural oils.
Four more, and the skip
The last row covers the rest of the range. Davines started as a family research lab in Parma in 1983, named for the founders' children Davide and Stefania, and its Solu wash cleanses scalp and hair while shielding against dryness. Drybar grew out of Alli Webb's blowout-only salon in Los Angeles, and On The Rocks uses activated charcoal. Rōz, pronounced rose, is from Mara Roszak, who has styled Emma Stone for the Oscars, and its scalp scrub shampoo uses AHA and BHA. Dae's Desert Detox removes oil and buildup with the brand's citrus scent. What I would skip is clarifying more than once a week, especially on color-treated hair. These shampoos are strong on purpose, so follow them with a proper conditioner every time.
How often to reset
Clarify once a week if you use dry shampoo daily, and every two weeks if you do not. Always condition afterward, from the ears down. If your hair still feels coated, the problem is probably your styling products, not your shampoo. A good reset should feel like a clean start, not a punishment. Rinse with cool water to finish.
