I cover the Oura Ring 5 in all six finishes, the Ring 4 and Ceramic, and the other smart rings and trackers worth a look. I say when I would reach for each one and what to check before you commit to a size.

Oura Ring 5: The Smallest Smart Ring and Its Rivals, Finish by Finish
In 2013, in Oulu, Finland, a small group of engineers set out to turn sleep and recovery data into something you could wear on one finger. The company was first called Jouzen, from the Finnish word for swan, before it became Oura. The first ring appeared at a San Francisco launch festival in March 2015. I love that a swan-inspired startup ended up making the smallest piece of health tech most of us own.
That history is why the Oura Ring 5 feels like a considered object and not a gadget. Oura launched it in late May 2026 as the world's smallest smart ring, 40% smaller than the Ring 4, at 6.09 mm wide and 2.28 mm thick. It is scratch-resistant titanium, and the brand clearly thinks of it as jewelry first.
Start with the finishes. The Gold is a lighter champagne tone and the Deep Rose leans copper, so both read as real jewelry next to a stack of thin bands. The Brushed Silver is matte and quiet, the Stealth is a dark charcoal I would pair with a black watch strap, and the glossy Black and polished Silver are the easy everyday picks. All have silver interiors with small sensor domes.
Then the charging gear. The Ring 5 Charging Case is matchbox-size and opens like a compact, and it is sold separately. It holds up to five charges, which is about a month away from a wall. The Ring 5 Charger is the square puck dock with a round cradle, and it is size-specific. Tip: order a sizing kit first, wear it for a full day, and pick your size after your hands have warmed up.

Ring 4 and Ceramic, band by band
Compare the two generations by the band, not the spec sheet. The Ring 4 in black, brushed silver, gold and rose gold is the same titanium idea in a slightly chunkier build, with up to eight days of battery. If you already own a Ring 4, it still does the job, and the shape is familiar.
The Ring 4 Ceramic is where the color lives. Midnight is a deep navy, Tide is a pale seafoam, Petal is a soft blush, and Cloud is a pearly white. They are glossy ceramic over a titanium core, so they look more like a ceramic watch than a tracker. I would wear Petal with gold hoops and Midnight with silver.
Fitting-room test: slide the ring on at the base of your finger and make a fist. It should turn with some resistance and not spin freely. Check the inside too, because the sensors sit against your skin all night and you should not feel the domes.
What I would skip: a glossy ceramic ring if you lift weights or climb at the gym, since hard knocks against a barbell are not kind to a shiny finish. The brushed silver or the black titanium holds up better.

Rings and bands beyond Oura
Rings are not the only way to track sleep, so test the alternatives against how you actually live. The Samsung Galaxy Ring comes in titanium black and titanium gold, runs up to seven days, ships with a sizing kit, and needs no app subscription. That last detail matters to a lot of people I know.
RingConn has three. The Gen 2 Air in dune gold is ultra-thin and champagne-toned, the Gen 2 in future silver adds sleep apnea monitoring, and the Gen 3 in brushed rose gold comes with a charging case and adds vascular health insights. Ultrahuman's Ring PRO in bionic gold is wide, polished and unapologetic about its exposed sensors, and it includes its own charging case.
If you do not want anything on your fingers, there are two bands. The Fitbit Air is screenless, a woven black band with a small pod and AI coaching, and the Charge 6 is slim with a color touchscreen and soft band. Both work with Android and iOS, so check your phone first.
Check the width of the band before you buy. Wide rings like the Ultrahuman can feel bulky on a small finger, so wear one around the house first.

How I would choose one
Here is what I would actually do. Decide whether you want a ring at all, because a band is simpler if you hate jewelry on your hands. Then pick the metal you already wear every day, silver or gold, and let that choose the finish.
Next, get sized properly with a kit and sleep in the sizing ring for a night. Buy the case only if you travel a lot, since the charger on your nightstand covers everything else.
The brand started life named after a swan, and the best thing I can say about the Ring 5 is that it finally looks like it belongs on a hand. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together A Dior Ring Is The Smallest Piece Of The House You Can Own and Bling Ring.
