Oversized Sweaters

Oversized Sweaters

Roomy knits with dropped shoulders and long sleeves that look relaxed, not sloppy.

Boyfriend crewnecks, slouchy V-necks and oversized turtlenecks in cashmere, wool, mohair and cotton, with tips on proportion so the volume looks intentional.

The oversized sweater is the piece people reach for first on a cold morning, and for good reason. A roomy fit traps warm air, layers easily over a shirt, and hides the fact that you have been sitting at a desk all day. The trick is choosing volume that looks deliberate. Dropped shoulders, long sleeves you can push up, and a hem that hits around the hip are signs of a well cut boyfriend style. Cashmere and alpaca blends drape softly, while chunky wool and cable knits stand away from the body for a cozier shape. V-necks show a little collarbone or a collar underneath, which helps break up the volume. Crewnecks feel classic and sporty. Oversized turtlenecks are the warmest of all. Neutral grey, oatmeal, navy and chocolate are easy starting points, and a forest green adds a little seasonal color.

Balance is everything with a big sweater. Pair it with something slimmer on the bottom, like straight leg jeans, a slip skirt or fitted trousers. A half tuck at the front shows your waist without fuss. Knee high boots or loafers keep the outfit polished. If you like a long, loose look, try it over wide leg denim with a pointed shoe for a cleaner line. Push the sleeves up a little so your wrists show and the shape looks lighter.

Our honest take

Our honest take is that an oversized sweater earns its spot because it solves so many cold weather problems at once. It is warm, forgiving and simple to style. We would start with a mid weight knit in grey or oatmeal, sized true rather than sized up, since these are already cut generously. Check that the shoulder seam sits a little below your natural shoulder and that the sleeves are long enough to cuff. Wash wool and cashmere by hand or on a gentle cycle, then dry flat. Treated with care, a good one lasts for years. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together The Oversized Leather Jacket and Oversized Blazers.
