Oxford Shirts: Blue, White, Pink and Striped Styles to Layer

The textured cotton button down that looks better with every wash.

Oxford shirts come in classic blue, white, pink and stripes, in relaxed, boxy and slim fits. I added layering ideas for sweaters, blazers and denim this fall.

An oxford shirt is defined by its fabric, a sturdy cotton woven with a basket texture that feels slightly thicker and softer than a standard dress shirt. It was first popular with university athletes and later became a staple of preppy dressing, and it has never really gone out of style since. The weave makes the shirt more casual and more durable, so it looks relaxed tucked into jeans yet still neat under a blazer. Many come with a button down collar that keeps its shape without ironing. Pale blue is the classic, white is the cleanest and pink or thin stripes add a little personality. Fits now range from slim and tailored to oversized and boxy, so it is easy to find one that suits your build. The best ones soften and fade gently over time, which only adds to their charm.

Wear an oxford alone with sleeves rolled and a pair of straight jeans, or layer it under a crewneck sweater so the collar and cuffs show. Tie a knit over your shoulders for a classic touch. A boxy shirt looks great half tucked into wide trousers, while a slim fit works under a blazer for the office. Loafers and a leather belt complete the look. For a softer look, try one in pink with cream trousers.

Our honest take

We think a pale blue oxford is the single most useful shirt you can own, since it works for work, weekends and nearly everything in between. Our advice is to choose a fit based on how you plan to wear it. Go slimmer for layering under knits and blazers, and roomier for wearing open or half tucked. Wash it often, because the cotton only gets softer. Once you have the blue, a white or a fine stripe makes a natural second shirt that keeps the rotation fresh. Keep a spare in the office for unexpected meetings. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Poplin Or Oxford and How to Tuck Shirts.
