Pantene shampoo has been around since 1945, and its name still points back to panthenol. Here are the three Pro-V bottles I would start with, other moisturizing shampoos that share the same aim, and the conditioners that finish the job.
Pantene Shampoo, Explained: From Swiss Vitamin Lab to Every Shower Shelf

Pantene began in Europe in 1945, created by the Swiss company Hoffmann-La Roche, and the name is based on panthenol, the ingredient that gave it a reason to exist. Procter & Gamble came to own it in 1985 through Richardson Vicks, and that is when it began rolling out across the US and the rest of the world. Pantene Pro-V first launched in Taiwan in 1990 and reached the US and global markets a year later. Somewhere in there, in 1986 by the brand's own history, came the line Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, which turned into a catchphrase people still quote.
That is a long life for a bottle, and it shows in how familiar it feels. When I say Pantene shampoo, most people picture a specific shower, a specific bathroom shelf, maybe a parent's. I like that. A shampoo that has lasted this long has usually found something plain and dependable to do.
The three bottles in the grid do three different jobs. Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal is the everyday one, for hair that feels dry by the second day. Pro-V Miracles Bond Repair is the one I would try if your ends are rough from color or heat. Pro-V Miracles Infinite Lengths is made for long hair, where the ends are years older than the roots.
Wash once, focus on the scalp, and let the suds rinse down through the lengths rather than scrubbing them. That is the whole trick. I also like to check the label for the word moisture or repair before I look at anything else, because it tells you what the bottle was built to do, and that matters more than the fragrance or the color of the liquid.

Other shampoos with the same goal
Not every head of hair wants the same bottle, and I like having a second shampoo around to alternate with. These share the aim of the Pro-V ones: clean without leaving hair feeling stripped.
Pureology's Hydrate Shampoo is made for dry hair, which suits the days when my hair feels dry. OUAI's Medium Hair Shampoo is aimed at the wide middle of hair types, neither fine nor thick, and it is the one I would put in a guest bathroom. Crown Affair's Hydrating Shampoo is made for dry, damaged hair, and it is the plainest, most no-fuss bottle of the group.
Living Proof's Perfect Hair Day Hydrating Shampoo is a gentle daily wash, and Kérastase's Gloss Absolu Shampoo, made for medium to thick hair, is the one I use when I want hair to look a bit glossier after a blow-dry. The Fable & Mane Hydrating Shampoo for Thick, Dry, Damaged Hair is made for thick hair, so I would save it for long, heavy hair or the winter months.
Do not be shy about alternating, either. Two shampoos on rotation is a perfectly sensible habit, and it lets you notice which one your hair actually prefers. A useful test: rinse, squeeze out the water, and rub a strand between your fingers. If it squeaks, the shampoo is stripping. If it feels slippery and clean, you are good.

Conditioners to pair with them
A shampoo only does half of wash day. The conditioner decides how your hair feels once it dries, so I treat the pairing as one decision, not two.
Pureology's Nanoworks Gold Strengthening Hydrating Conditioner is the strengthening, hydrating pick for hair that has seen color or heat. Living Proof's Perfect Hair Day Hydrating Conditioner is the one I reach for when I want to match the Living Proof shampoo. K18's Damage Shield Protective Conditioner is the repair-minded option, a protective conditioner for hair that has been styled hard. Nécessaire's Hydrating Cream Conditioner adds hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and panthenol, so there is a nice echo of the very ingredient Pantene was named for.
amika's The Kure Strength Repair Conditioner is a strength repair conditioner, and Vegamour's GRO Revitalizing Conditioner is made for thinning hair and pairs well with a scalp-focused wash.
What I would skip: putting conditioner on the roots if your hair is fine or oily, and rinsing it out too fast. Keep it from the scalp, comb it through the mid-lengths and ends with fingers, and give it a full minute. Cold water at the end is optional, but it makes the rinse feel less like a chore. If you like to wear your hair up in a clip after washing, wait until it is at least half dry, since tight styles on soaking strands can tug at them, and a wide-tooth comb is kinder than a brush at that stage.

Picking one and sticking with it
My advice is to pick one shampoo and one conditioner, and use them for at least a month. Hair is slow to show you what a product is doing, and bouncing between six bottles teaches you nothing. I keep a small note in my phone with the date I started a new shampoo, and I check back after four weeks to see whether my ends feel softer, whether the scalp feels comfortable by day three, and whether styling takes less effort.
If your hair feels dry, start with the moisture bottle. If it is rough at the ends, try the bond repair. Wash your hair fewer times a week if you can, and use conditioner every time. If you notice sudden shedding, itching that will not settle, or a scalp that is red or flaky for more than a few weeks, see a doctor or dermatologist rather than switching bottles again. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together A Smoother Shower Shelf Built Around CeraVe SA Cream and Maui Shampoo.
