Peixoto Dresses and Swimwear

Peixoto is a Miami swim and resortwear label founded by Mauricio Esquenazi, a Colombia native and former advertising agent who set up production in his hometown of Cali. The name comes from the Portuguese word for fish, and the label is known for color, print and pieces like the Flamingo one-piece. This edit gathers Liam and Clementine dresses, Benji and Emmy bikini tops, tiered maxi skirts, Piper and Ora cover-ups and the bikini bottoms that mix and match with them.

Resort dresses and a romper

Peixoto is a Miami label with a Colombian heart. Mauricio Esquenazi, the founder and creative director, grew up in Cali and wanted to create jobs in his hometown, which is why the production factory is there. He is a former advertising agent, and the name comes from the Portuguese word for fish. By 2012 the label was already on its third swim collection, Color Me Lovely, which took its mood from 1920s Palm Beach, and it has been known since for pieces such as the Flamingo one-piece and convertible bandeau bikini tops. The dresses here are made for the same sort of day. The Liam and Isabella midi dresses are the simple ones, the Clementine maxi comes in a tiered version, and the Audrey cotton flower maxi dress is the sweetest. The Adeline floral off the shoulder minidress and the Piper lace trimmed cotton mini are for a lunch with a view. The Harriet jumpsuit and the Torey romper are for travel days, and the Nora knit dress is the surprise. For packing ideas, a designer vacation wardrobe goes through what to take.

Bikini tops and easy tops

The bikini tops are the heart of the label. The Benji bikini top comes with the Tonie bottom, and there are separate Asher, Portia floral, Bomba, Rae and Emmy tops, including the textured bandeau. If you prefer a top that works off the beach, the Amelia ruffle crop top, the Penelope one shoulder top and the Ezra tie strap crop top look just as good with a skirt. The Mariel smocked tank, the Sienna tie front tank and the Angie knit linen blend tunic are the relaxed ones. What I would skip is wearing a bandeau top with a halter neck cover-up, because the straps compete. For deciding between two pieces and one, one piece or bikini helps.

Skirts and cover-up sets

The skirts are long, light and made to swing. Riley comes as a maxi skirt and as a 100% cotton maxi, and the Rily tiered maxi skirt adds volume. The Ellis sheer maxi skirt is the one for a swimsuit underneath, while the Soa tie side skirt and the Belle mini skirt are shorter. The Mila top and Luca cover-up shorts are sold as a matched set, and the Luca knitted drawstring shorts are a quick way to leave the beach. The Evy woven straight leg pants and the Rowan midi skirt are for a town day. The Paula and Lydia skirts finish the group, and a polka dot skirt shows how a small print behaves. Try a long skirt with a plain white top, as in the midi skirt edit.

Bikini bottoms and cover-ups

The finishing pieces mostly pair with the tops above. The Bella, Millie and Tinga bikini bottoms, the Tonie bottom and the Tonie leopard print bottom let you mix and match. The Piper cotton dress, the Ora cotton embroidered mini dress and the Lori maxi skirt sarong are the cover-ups, and each one is meant to go over a swimsuit and out to lunch. Because the bottoms come in low rise shapes, they sit well under a dress that ends at the hip or the thigh. Pick a bottom in a solid color if the top carries the print, and the reverse. Cover-ups that do more work makes the same case.

How I would wear it

I would pack one bikini top, a cotton maxi skirt and a cover-up dress, and wear them in three different ways across a long weekend. The factory team in Cali has mostly stayed after ten years, according to the brand, and the stated goal is clothes that make the wearer feel beautiful, with a commitment to economic empowerment. That feels like the right note to end on.
