PEIXOTO Swimwear: Best Pieces for the Beach

PEIXOTO Swimwear: Best Pieces for the Beach

PEIXOTO is the Miami swimwear and resortwear label Mauricio Esquenazi started in 2011, with its own factory in his hometown of Cali, Colombia. I like how it treats the sunny part of a trip as something worth dressing for, and this edit is how I would pack it.

A swim label built between Miami and Cali

PEIXOTO makes sense to me as a two-place story. Miami is home base, but Cali, Colombia is where the brand's own factory sits, and Mauricio Esquenazi started the label in 2011 partly to create work in his hometown. The About page talks about a team that shares knowledge from the sewing floor all the way to the head designer, which is not something most swim labels bother to say.

I like the way the clothes are framed as wearable time off, because that leaves room for the beach and for the rest of the day. An early marker was Color Me Lovely, a 2013 collection that drew on Palm Beach's 1920s glamour and put detail, fit and comfort at the center.

My plan for it is a mini or a tiered maxi, a sarong, bikini separates and a layer for the walk back from the water. The point is to make the sunny part of a trip feel considered, without it looking like a costume.

Short hems, long afternoons

The dresses balance a little polish with vacation ease. The Piper Mini Dress and the Wyatt Mini Dress are the shorter choices, while the Clementine Tiered Maxi Dress and the Audrey Maxi Dress let the day move with a longer hem. The Nora Knit Dress breaks from the printed maxis with a knit surface, so I would keep it on after a swim day rather than save it for an event.

Picture her meeting friends for lunch in the Piper, then bringing an open shirt for the ride home. Before choosing between mini and maxi, I would check the size chart and think about where the day is actually going, because that decides the hem.

The beach day, and everything after

For a beach plan, I would start with a swim shape and build outward. The Portia Bikini Top & Bella Full Bikini Bottom, the Silas Bikini Top and the Fifi Triangle Bikini Top & Tonie Bottom are the bikini core, with the Tonie Bikini Bottom and the Benji Bikini Top & Tonie Bottom adding other combinations. The Soa Tie Side Skirt, the Camila Maxi Skirt and the Lori Maxi Sarong carry the same sun-ready mood over a swimsuit.

The Clementine Maxi Dress Swim Cover-Up, the Angie Cover-Up Tunic and the Mila Top Swim Cover-Up & Luca Swim Cover-Up Shorts make leaving the water look like an outfit. The Harriet Jumpsuit, the Torey Romper, the Lucia Top and the Jesse Cover-Up Top & Evy Pants finish the packing list.

In my fashion dreams, she goes from a late swim into the Camila Maxi Skirt and a simple top, a sarong tucked in her bag. Treat the bikini top and bottom as separate fit decisions, then add one cover-up long enough for wherever the day goes. What I would skip: packing three cover-ups that all do the same job.

Sun on the itinerary

What I like most about PEIXOTO is how well the clothes match the place they come from. Swimwear is the start, but the mini, maxi, sarong, skirt and cover-up fill in all the hours when a trip is not just a beach chair. The Cali factory keeps the work close to its roots, and Miami is a fitting home for a wardrobe built around sun, although I suspect I would still pack too many sarongs. I went deeper on a related idea in BEACH RIOT Swimwear & Tops: Where to Start.
