Perfume Sale Season: How To Shop Fragrance Without Regrets

Perfume Sale Season: How To Shop Fragrance Without Regrets

A perfume sale is the moment people buy a full bottle they have never worn for a whole day. Here is how I test a scent properly, pick a size I will finish and store it well, with discovery sets, travel sprays, rollerballs and duos to try first. Start with a set of samples.

Try it for a week first

In 2005, Italian archaeologists announced they had found a Bronze Age perfume factory at Pyrgos-Mavroraki, on Cyprus, roughly 4,000 years old. The team reconstituted scents of laurel, cinnamon and myrtle, mixed with olive oil, from clay bottles found there. That perfume was exported around the Eastern Mediterranean, so someone, somewhere, was buying a scent that had travelled a long way to reach them. We have not changed that habit as much as we like to think.

A perfume sale is that habit in modern form: the bottle is on the shelf, the mood is festive, and you decide in two minutes. My case for slowing down is simple. A scent changes over hours, and the first spray tells you almost nothing. Vogue describes eau de parfum as typically 15 to 20 percent fragrance oil and eau de toilette as 5 to 15, and it is careful to say those ranges are convention and not standards, so real wear time varies by brand and by skin.

The trick is to try before you commit, and the first grid is built for that. PHLUR's Fragrance Discovery Set and KAYALI's FREEDOM Discovery Layering Sampler Set let you wear several scents from one brand. Cult Gaia's Eau de Parfum Discovery Set, Boy Smells' Discovery Fragrance Set and Maison Louis Marie's Eau de Parfum Discovery Set do the same at a smaller scale. By Rosie Jane and NEST New York each have a set of their own, and Josie Maran's All Spritzed Up is a mini set for the more playful. Ellis Brooklyn, The 7 Virtues, Henry Rose and LORE each have a set too, so you can start with the family of scents you already like.

Travel sprays of women's favorites

One rule for testing: try no more than three scents in a session. Osmetheca, a perfumery guide, recommends exactly that, and after the third your nose is past helping. Blotter first, then skin, and check again at 20 to 30 minutes.

A travel spray is the honest way to wear a scent properly, because you can carry it through a whole day, a flight and a dinner. Glossier's You Soie, Tom Ford's Soleil Neige with citrus, and Maison Margiela's Replica Never-ending Summer with orange and vetiver are the three I would try if you like bright and clean. Prada's Infusion d'Iris with neroli and mandarin is the quiet elegant one, and By Rosie Jane's REMI with citrus is the light one to slip into a tote.

For evenings, Henry Rose's Flora Carnivora with jasmine and tuberose has the best name here, and Ellis Brooklyn's ISLA SIRENA with coconut and lime is a holiday bag scent. Yves Saint Laurent's Libre travel spray, with orange blossom and lavender, is the easy way to wear it for a week before the full bottle. Valentino's Donna Born in Roma, Prada's Paradoxe, Viktor&Rolf's Flowerbomb and Yves Saint Laurent's Mon Paris are the sweeter, warmer sprays to carry for an evening.

A practical bonus: the TSA allows perfume in carry-on bags in containers of 3.4 ounces or 100 ml or smaller, so a travel spray goes through security without any planning.

What I would skip: judging a scent on paper alone and deciding it is the one. Paper cannot tell you what your skin will do with it.

Rollerballs and minis for a first try

Try this: wear one mini on the inside of your elbow for a full day and write down how you feel about it at breakfast, lunch and bedtime. Perfumers talk about the opening, the heart and the drydown, and a mini lets you meet all three.

Rollerballs are the most forgiving format. Dior's Hypnotic Poison Roller-Pearl, NEST New York's Madagascar Vanilla perfume oil, and SKYLAR's Boardwalk Delight roller ball fit in a pocket and are easy to reapply. Kai's Mini Eau de Parfum is the small bottle for someone who wears one scent and loves it.

KAYALI's minis are a fun pair: Capri in a Bottle Lemon Sugar 14 and Marrakesh in a Bottle Orange Blossom 24 are two ways to test a scent that is either sweet and sharp or floral. OUAI's Mini Melrose Place and Mini North Bondi are named after places, which helps me remember which is which.

A pairing I like: a citrus roller for the day and a vanilla one for the evening, kept in the same bag.

What I would skip: buying a full size after one good hour. Wait for the drydown, ideally a full day, and then decide.

Perfume duos and sets for gifting

Start with a size you will finish. Good Housekeeping's experts say open perfume has no fixed expiry, and properly stored it can last three years or more, though citrus notes fade faster than woody or resinous ones. So a small pair that you wear through is smarter than a large bottle that lingers.

Duos are the sensible way to gift. Marc Jacobs' Mini Daisy Duo, Rare Beauty's Rare Moments rollerball duo and Versace's Bright Crystal Eau de Toilette Duo are the easy ones. Versace's Dylan Blush Pink Eau de Parfum Duo is the pinker one. Dolce&Gabbana's Mini Light Blue Eau de Toilette set is for someone who likes their summer scents light, and the house's Your Devotion duo is the warmer gift.

For the friend who cannot choose, Lake & Skye's 11 11 Eau de Parfum Gift Set and Nonfiction's Floral Eau de Parfum Mini Quartet are the interesting ones, a small library of scents to work through.

Holiday sets and sampler vouchers are where a perfume sale really shows up, so I check set sizes and what is inside before I look at anything else.

After the duos there is one more grid of odd formats: Sephora Favorites sampler sets, Rare Beauty's Rare Beginnings and Miu Miu's Miutine in travel size, and solid perfumes and oils from Sidia and Maison Louis Marie that slip into a pocket. Past those are the independent bottles, for when a scent you have worn all week deserves a full size.

Then store what you buy well. Good Housekeeping UK is blunt: the bathroom is the worst place for perfume, since heat, humidity and light cause oxidation and evaporation. Keep it in its box in a drawer or a wardrobe, in a cool, dry, dark place.

What I would skip: leaving a gift bottle on a sunny windowsill because it looks nice. Heat and light are the enemies of a good bottle.

The best sites for perfume sales

Most good fragrance deals land on a calendar, so the trick is knowing where to look and when. Sephora runs its Beauty Insider Savings Events twice a year, in spring and again before the holidays, with 10 percent off for Insiders, 15 for VIB and 20 for Rouge members. The loyalty program is free, so join before the event starts. Its 50 percent off One-Day Deals run in March and again from late August into September.

Ulta's 21+ Days of Beauty lands at the same time, twice a year in March and September, with three weeks of daily 50 percent off steals. Wirecutter's deals writer has noticed that Sephora tends to match Ulta on overlapping products during those weeks, so check both before you buy.

Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale is the one for sets. This year it ran from July 18 to August 9 and was full of exclusive fragrance duos and discovery sets, like a Parfums de Marly duo of Delina and Delina Exclusif and a Le Labo discovery set.

For everyday discounts on bottles you already know, FragranceNet has been selling online since 1997 and says it carries 40,000 genuine brand-name products, and FragranceX, started on Long Island in 2001, works the same way. FragranceNet also sells testers and unboxed bottles, so read each listing carefully, and only buy a scent there once you have worn it.

What I would skip: marketplace sellers with no return policy. A perfume sale is only a good deal if the bottle is real.

The bottle I would finish first

I think the best way to shop a perfume sale is the boring one: sample first, wear it for a week, then buy the smallest size you will use up. Ask yourself where the bottle will live before you buy it, and if the honest answer is the bathroom shelf, choose a smaller size or find a drawer. A scent you finish in a year never has time to spoil.

If you have to buy blind, pick an eau de toilette in a fresh family, the tier Vogue calls better for daily and office wear. The Bronze Age perfumers at Pyrgos-Mavroraki shipped their scents in clay. You can at least sniff before you buy.
