philosophy Perfume: Cristina Carlino's Clean, Happy Scents from Grace to Cream

The philosophy perfume shelf is built around Amazing Grace, a scent made to be worn for yourself, plus the gourmand creams and body mists that followed. This edit walks through the Grace family, the vanilla and cashmere side, and five clean skin scents from other brands.

The story of philosophy perfume begins with skincare, not scent. Cristina Carlino founded the brand in 1996 in Phoenix, Arizona, and launched it at a press event at the Rainbow Room in New York on March 21 of that year. The brand's own story says she invented the lunch-time peel and that efficacy works better with joy. Keep that second part in mind, because it explains the fragrances better than any note list does.

Amazing Grace is the one most people mean when they say philosophy. The brand calls it its best-loved fragrance, with bergamot, lily of the valley and musk, and says it was made for women to wear for themselves. It was reportedly created in response to Carlino's life-long sensitivity to wearing fragrance, which I find believable, because it smells like someone trying to make a scent that would not bother her. It is clean without being cold, and soft without being sleepy.

The Eau de Parfum is the everyday bottle. The Intense version is the same idea with more staying power, good for cooler days when a light scent vanishes. Radiant Grace Eau de Parfum and Radiant Grace Intense Eau de Parfum are the brighter cousins, for people who like the Grace idea but want something with a little more sparkle. Pure Grace Eau de Toilette is the crisp one, the brand describes it as water lily, leafy greens and musk, with a just-stepped-out-of-the-shower feeling. That description is accurate. It is the one I wear for errands and gym bags.

The soft, sweet side of the shelf

The other side of philosophy is sweet, and it is where the brand gets playful. Fresh Cream is the center of it, and the shower gel carries notes of tonka bean, whipped cream and vanilla bean. The fragrance versions take that dessert idea and turn it into something you can actually wear to work without smelling like a bakery.

Fresh Cream Eau de Toilette is the original, light and creamy. Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere Eau de Toilette is the cozier version, better in colder months, a scent that feels like your favorite knit. Fresh Cream Silk Cloud Eau de Parfum is the richest of the three, the one for evening, when you want the same soft cream with a little more depth and a longer wear.

For warmer days, there are the body and hair mists. Vanilla Hug Body and Hair Fragrance Mist is a simple, sweet vanilla, and Coconut Rush Body and Hair Fragrance Mist is lighter and more summery. I use a mist after a shower, on damp hair and the backs of my knees, where it lasts longer than anywhere else.

A small trick with the gourmands: wear one at a time, and keep your body lotion unscented. Two sweet things together turn sticky, and the point of these is to smell soft, not like dessert. If a cream scent feels heavy by lunchtime, switch to the Pure Grace side of the shelf and let the sweetness rest for a day.

Skin scents from other brands

Clean skin scents are a whole category now, and I love them. They do not announce you. They make it seem as though you just happen to smell good. If you like the philosophy way of doing it, these five are the ones I would try next.

Glossier's You Fleur Eau de Parfum is a floral version of the skin-scent idea, light and a little sheer. Burberry's Her Eau de Parfum is fuller and fruitier, a very recognizable party scent that still sits easily on skin. Merit's Retrospect L'Extrait de Parfum is the quiet, minimal one, for people who want a fragrance that stays close. Kayali's Freedom Musk Santal 34 Eau de Parfum is warmer and woodier, with the musk in the name doing its job. Marc Jacobs Beauty's Perfect Eau de Parfum is the polished floral, soft and neat, the one I would wear to a wedding or a long meeting. Try two of them on opposite wrists and compare after an hour, because that is when a clean scent shows its real character.

What I would skip: spraying a new scent on a paper strip and deciding from that. Clean scents are made to sit on skin and change with you, so the strip tells you very little. I would also skip testing more than three in one visit, since your nose stops telling you the truth after that.

How I wear all of it

I wear fragrance lightly now, and I keep a small rotation: one clean scent for daytime, one creamy one for evenings, one mist for the gym bag. That is enough for most weeks.

Spray on skin right after a shower, when it is warm and slightly damp, and scent lasts longer. Two sprays on the chest, one behind each knee, and you are done. Resist the urge to rub your wrists together, which flattens the top notes. If fragrance has ever bothered you, try a small spot on the inside of your elbow first and wait a day, because a new scent can react differently on different skin.

Start with Amazing Grace if you are unsure. It is the easy one, and it has a nice story: a scent that was made so that the person wearing it could enjoy it first.
