Polka Dot Top Guide: Bow Blouses, Sheer Silk And The Easy Dotted Tee

Polka Dot Top Guide: Bow Blouses, Sheer Silk And The Easy Dotted Tee

The polka dot top took its name from a dance craze in the 1840s and still turns up on every spring runway. Here are bow and scarf-neck blouses, button-downs, sheer silks, halters and easy tees, with notes on how to wear the dot now.

From a dance craze to the bow blouse

In the 1840s a Czech dance swept through Europe and America, and shops stuck its name on all kinds of products. The polka faded. The dot kept the name. The first printed mention of a polka dot is credited to Godey's Lady's Book in 1857, and dots had a lot to live down before that, because a random spot on cloth once read as a sign of illness. It took machine weaving, with its perfectly even rows, to make them look deliberate.

That is still the whole appeal of a polka dot top. It is a print that looks planned. Spring 2026 leaned all the way in: ELLE singled out a sheer white Valentino blouse with oversized dots and a black bow.

The first grid is that bow and scarf-neck idea. The Valentino Garavani pussy-bow blouse in cream silk crepe de chine is the closest thing here to that runway look, and the scarf-detailed version in white lets the ties hang long instead of knotting. Zimmermann's pleated bow-detailed chiffon top is softer and more romantic. Alexandre Vauthier's sleeveless blouse has a scarf neck that does the work of a necklace. Charo Ruiz's Olivar adds guipure lace and a knot at the waist, and the LPA Kella, the Dôen Elene in silk-blend twill and the Marant Étoile Maria in organic cotton voile are the easy weekday versions.

A tip for any bow: tie it loose and slightly off centre. A tight, perfect bow at the throat looks like a uniform.

Polka dot shirts and button-downs

Julia Roberts' brown and cream polka dot dress in Pretty Woman, designed for the film by Marilyn Vance, is the reason a lot of us think dots can look grown up. It came with gloves, white kitten heels and a hat, and it read as polished, not cute. A dotted shirt does the same thing for a Tuesday.

The Nili Lotan Gaia in navy silk crepe de chine is the one I would buy first, because navy dots sit with denim, camel and grey without a second thought. The Kiki de Montparnasse shirt in white cotton and silk is crisp enough for a meeting. Matteau's red organic cotton shirt is the bold one, best with plain trousers and nothing else printed. SPRWMN's fitted silk button-up is narrow through the body, so it tucks cleanly. Helsa's relaxed silk chiffon shirt floats, and Alexandre Vauthier's black button-down top is sharper. The Valentino Plusdepois Pois Medio shirt is classic black and white, and the Valentino Garavani gathered shirt mixes dots with leopard, which takes nerve.

Here is a test I like. Stand across the room from a mirror. Small dots should blur into a texture, almost a solid. Large dots should still read as dots. Pick small for work and large for weekends.

What I would skip: a sheer chiffon shirt tucked into high trousers without a cami. The waistband shows through.

Sheer and silk polka dot tops

Silk changes the dot. On cotton a dot sits flat. On satin and georgette it catches light and moves, which is why the dressier polka dot top is almost always silk.

The Frame Gillian in black silk voile is the sheer blouse I would reach for most, because it has sleeves and a collar and looks finished over a black slip. The BY Malene Birger Derris voile top is lighter and looser for summer. The Adela georgette silk top is the softest drape in this grid. Nili Lotan's Emile silk-satin cami is the one to layer under a blazer, and the WARDROBE.NYC silk tank is the plain, narrow version for anyone who hates fuss. Self-Portrait's navy satin top is dressier, and Rebecca Vallance's Bacio sits off the shoulder in satin twill for a wedding or a dinner. Stella McCartney's gathered mesh T-shirt in burgundy is the odd one out, sheer but sporty.

Under sheer, wear a slip or bralette in your own skin tone or in solid black. Anything in between looks like a mistake.

What I would skip: sheer dots with a lace trim and a printed skirt all at once. One sheer layer, one print, done.

Polka dot tanks, camis and halters

Summer dots are a different animal. Once the sleeves go, a polka dot top stops reading as office wear and starts reading as a holiday, and the cut matters more than the print.

The halters lead. Françoise's Susan halter is black with pale lime dots and a long scarf tie at the neck, and it is my favourite here. Nili Lotan's Nikki halterneck in black silk is the dressier one. Theory's belted halterneck tank in ivory is the most wearable, a halter with a waist. The AEXAE linen halter neck has a micro dot that reads almost as a texture.

Then the strapless shapes. Faithfull's Petro in brown linen is the easy one for a long lunch. Cara Cara's Tilda has a belted peplum in navy, which flatters a straight waist. Adriana Degreas' black bandeau top is the beach-to-dinner piece, and Vivienne Westwood's Sunday poplin bustier is structured enough to wear with jeans and nothing else.

Linen creases in an hour. That is part of the look, so steam it once and then stop worrying.

What I would skip: a strapless top on a day you are carrying a heavy shoulder bag. The strap drags it down all afternoon.

Polka dot tees, bodysuits and easy tops

The easiest way into dots is a T-shirt. It turns the print into a basic, the way a Breton stripe works, and it is the version you will actually wear on a Saturday.

The Comme des Garçons Play tee in navy has the red heart with eyes over a dotted ground, so it is two jokes in one shirt. The WARDROBE.NYC bodysuit in white is clean under a black blazer or tucked into jeans with no bunching. Wolford's Sweet Dots string bodysuit in wild plum is sheer and very fitted, a night-out layer under an open shirt. Eaves' Vivian top in black dot is a simple shape for every day.

L'Academie has two here. The Ramona in brown and purple dots and the Selma are both soft, feminine tops that look good with a denim skirt. LPA's Carla in cream and black is a little sweeter, and Faithfull's Ana peplum in navy linen is the one I would pack for a trip, because it works with shorts and with white trousers.

Dots and stripes can work together, but only if one of them is tiny. A micro dot tee under a wide striped shirt looks intentional.

What I would skip: a dotted bodysuit under a dotted skirt. Too much of the same rhythm.

How I would wear a polka dot top this season

I would buy one bow blouse and one plain dotted tee, and wear them more than anything else on this page. The blouse goes with black trousers and loafers. The tee goes with everything else.

The runways keep giving permission. ELLE UK counted dots at Altuzarra and Khaite for spring 2026, and ELLE noted a Dries Van Noten halter in the same season, which tells me this is a long cycle, not a one summer thing. Keep the rest of the outfit quiet, choose one size of dot per outfit, and let the polka dot top be the only print in the room. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Polka Dot Dresses and The Sheer Layer.
