Prabal Gurung is the New York designer who carried Kathmandu and New Delhi into sculpted, vividly colored dresses. I love his clothes for how much drama they hold with just one idea at the center.

Prabal Gurung Dresses: A Shopper's Guide
The mind behind the glamour
What I love about Prabal Gurung is the tension between precision and exuberance: a sculpted line, then a color or a bit of movement that changes the temperature of a room. He was born in Singapore, raised in Kathmandu and began designing in New Delhi before moving to New York for Parsons. He spent five years as design director at Bill Blass and launched his own collection in February 2009.
Production is part of the story too. The label makes more than 80 percent of its collection in New York City, which in his own telling ties the glamour to something local. His work draws on formal eveningwear, vibrant color and cultural details such as Nepali embroidery, and it reaches past the runway: Gurung and his siblings set up the Shikshya Foundation Nepal in 2011.
To me, his strongest clothes hold that same mix of celebration and intention: a clear silhouette, a memorable color and a reason to look twice.

Dresses with a little architecture
His dresses feel most like him when a clean line meets a note of drama. The Tie-neck Cocoon Mini Dress and Tie-neck Short Cocoon Mini Dress give the neckline a focal point, and the Pointelle Slip Maxi Trumpet Dress moves closer to the body and gives texture the stage. The Maxi Dress, Off-shoulder Mini Dress, Ruched Waist Yoke Dress, Bias Flare Hem Midi Dress, Corset Waist Sheath Dress and Asymmetrical Shoulder Mini Dress fill in the rest of the range, from easy to pointed. I went deeper on a related idea in Aya Muse Dresses: What Shoppers Should Know. I went deeper on a related idea in The Hot List: Trending Dresses, Pants and Beauty Shoppers Love.
I would save a cocoon mini for dinner or a gallery opening with a slim heel, so the volume stays readable. For a longer evening, the Heidi Gown in black and the Linda Gown in red bring a more formal frame. In my fashion dreams, she walks into a candlelit room in the Heidi Gown with one sculptural earring and I let the dress carry the rest. My test: sit down and lift your arms before a long event, especially in a short tie-neck shape.

A top with its own point of view
Here the label gives its drama a smaller footprint. The Deep V-neck Halter Satin Top draws the eye up and gives tailored trousers a clean counterpoint, and the Tie-neck Cropped Cocoon Blouse brings volume to the shoulder. The Corset Strapless Panier Top is the one I would save for a night when I want the top half to lead.
The Plisse Corset Tank Bodysuit tucks into a full skirt without extra bulk, and the Corset Seam Tank works with a softer bottom for contrast. Picture her at a summer dinner in the halter top and a column skirt, hair off her neck. What I would skip: pairing the cropped blouse with anything low-slung, since the hem wants to meet a high waist.

Why I remember the clothes
What keeps me interested is the balance between a clear silhouette and a personal point of view shaped by Gurung's move from Kathmandu to New York. I find the clothes most compelling when there is one idea at the center, a sculpted waist, a saturated shade or a beautifully paced hem. For a big event, I would let one piece set the mood of the room and keep the rest of the styling calm. That is the sort of dressing I remember after the evening is over. Although I will admit I remember the red gown first.
