Prada Carbon, the Lavender With a Metallic Edge

Prada Carbon, the Lavender With a Metallic Edge

Prada carbon is Luna Rossa Carbon, the 2017 men's fragrance with a cool, mineral lavender. Here are eight Prada fragrances, from Carbon to Paradigme, and eight lavender and woody scents I compared them with.

Magazine-style product test page with five cut-out products and a best-for note on each: Prada Luna Rossa Carbon Eau de Toilette; Prada Luna Rossa Carbon Eau de Parfum; Prada Luna Rossa Ocean Eau de Toilette; Prada Luna Rossa Black Eau de Parfum; Yves Saint Laurent Y Eau de Toilette

Luna Rossa Carbon and the Name Behind It

Prada carbon means Luna Rossa Carbon, which launched in 2017 with Daniela Andrier as the perfumer, according to Fragrantica. The Luna Rossa name comes from Prada's America's Cup sailing challenge, and one report says it was chosen because of a red moon that appeared the night Prada's Patrizio Bertelli decided to enter the race. It is also the title of a Neapolitan song. I like a fragrance line with a story that specific.

Carbon was a flanker of the lavender original, and the pitch was the collision of nature and technology. Fragrantica lists Prada's wording as "metallic notes of Lavender" with Italian green bergamot, patchouli and Ambroxan. I read that as lavender with a cold, mineral edge, closer to a clean shirt than a barbershop. One review site frames it as Prada's answer to Sauvage, which tells you who it was built to compete with.

If you searched this phrase, you probably want to know which bottle to smell first. The Carbon pages here cover the eau de toilette and the eau de parfum, and the parfum version leans darker with licorice and cypress.

The first grid is Prada, from Carbon to Ocean, Black and Paradigme. The second grid is lavender and woody scents from other houses that I compared them with. My tip: spray once on a pulse point, wait ten minutes, and judge the lavender after the bergamot has burned off.

Eight Prada Fragrances, Carbon to Paradigme

Start with Prada Luna Rossa Carbon Eau de Toilette, the hero here, and in this grid every bottle is Prada. The brand lists Italian bergamot, lavender and Ambroxan in a warm woods profile, and it is the one I would hand to anyone who wants a clean, modern fougère. Luna Rossa Carbon Eau de Parfum is the dark, gourmand sibling, with lavender, warm licorice and cypress in a refillable lacquered bottle. It suits cooler evenings, and it is the one to try if you found the first too airy.

Luna Rossa Eau de Toilette is the original lavender and sage idea, a bright, sportive citrus and woods scent. Luna Rossa Ocean Eau de Toilette swaps the metal for aquatic freshness, with bergamot, iris and vetiver. Luna Rossa Ocean Eau de Parfum is a different recipe, grapefruit with incense and vanilla bean, boosted by a molecule called AmberXtreme according to the brand. Luna Rossa Black Eau de Parfum is the sweetest of the family, with bergamot, musk and ambergris, and the brand describes sweeter details fizzing over woody amber.

Paradigme Eau de Parfum pairs Calabrian bergamot with green Bourbon geranium and ambery woods. Paradigme Le Parfum pushes the same woods toward amber, leathery vanilla and geranium. Both have refills.

What I would skip: Luna Rossa Black or Paradigme Le Parfum on a hot commute. The sweeter, ambery ones will feel heavy, and Ocean or the Carbon eau de toilette will behave better.

Eight Lavender and Woody Scents to Compare

Lavender is the thread here, so I lined up how different houses use it. Yves Saint Laurent Y Eau de Toilette is the freshest, with sage and lavender over a crisp bite of geranium and incense. Burberry London Eau de Toilette is warmer and older in spirit, bergamot, lavender and cinnamon over mimosa, leather, tobacco and oak moss. Jo Malone London Silver Birch & Lavender Cologne is the lightest and the most unisex, grapefruit and English lavender cut with birch.

For something sweeter, Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Elixir has lavender, benzoin and tonka bean, and Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Le Parfum adds cardamom, iris and vanilla. One bottle is dressed as a sailor and the other as a captain, and both are intense. Armani Beauty Stronger With You Parfum goes cozier, with leathery vanilla, a chestnut accord, pink pepper and lavender.

Rabanne Invictus Parfum is the sporty one, a marine accord with lavender, leather and sandalwood. KILIAN Paris Old Fashioned Eau de Parfum is the outlier, with no lavender in its notes. It opens on wheat absolute and cedarwood, and the brand calls it an ode to aging whiskey barrels.

What I would skip: the Le Male pair if you want something quiet at the office. Both are intense, and the Yves Saint Laurent or Jo Malone London bottles are easier to wear around people.

Where I Would Start

I think Luna Rossa Carbon is the right first sniff if you like lavender but not the soapy kind, because the mineral edge keeps it from smelling like a candle. Try the eau de toilette first, then move to the parfum if you want it darker. If Carbon feels too cool, the Yves Saint Laurent Y and Burberry London bottles show the warmer side of the same herb. Test on skin, not paper, since Ambroxan changes a lot over an hour. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together YSL Libre Perfume, the Lavender That Took Eight Years and YSL Libre Intense And The Libre Family.
