Purple Jeans

The Colour Story Everyone Underestimated

Colour returned to denim faster than almost any other category, and one shade did most of the work. purple jeans are the clearest example of a colour trend arriving in a fabric that resisted it for decades. This edit covers four genuinely violet pairs.

A Colour Denim Spent A Century Avoiding

Indigo dominated denim for practical reasons rather than aesthetic ones, because it was abundant, colourfast in a specific fading way, and the whole industry was built around it. Anything else was a novelty. What changed is that the market spent the late 2010s in neutrals and then turned hard toward saturated colour, and denim was the last category to follow because the dyeing infrastructure was the hardest to change. Violet and lilac washes are the result, and they read as deliberate in a way a coloured jean never used to. Free People's We The Free Highland low rise bowed leg jeans in cool violet are the most fashion-forward cut here, Wrangler's Worldwide mid rise wide leg in bellflower is the most classic, Boden's Primrose patch pocket jeans in clover purple are the brightest, and Baum und Pferdgarten's Napolen jeans in dusty grey lilac are the most muted of these purple jeans.

Purple denim, light to dark

AGOLDE, Chloe, DL1961, AG and L'Agence add purple jeans in washes from lilac to deep plum. Black or cream tops keep the colour looking easy.

Our honest take

Coloured denim fades faster and less attractively than indigo, because the dyes sit on the surface rather than penetrating the yarn the way indigo does, so expect visible loss of saturation within a year of regular washing. Wash cold, inside out, and infrequently. Lilac and dusty tones hide that fading considerably better than a bright violet does, which is worth weighing when choosing. Bright purple also reads very differently in daylight and under indoor lighting, shifting toward blue or pink depending on the bulb. If you take one thing away, buy the muted shades if you want them to last and the bright ones knowing they have a shelf life.
