Red Dress: Midis, Minis and Satin Gowns for When Only Red Will Do

Red Dress: Midis, Minis and Satin Gowns for When Only Red Will Do

A red dress guide that moves from midi and maxi shapes to short minis and a final run of satin gowns. It covers shade, shape and how to style each one, plus the simple laundry rule that keeps the color bright.

A red dress needs no reason

Red has a longer paper trail than most colors. Vogue reports that one Italian couturier had his own Pantone shade, and that he first showed a red dress, called Fiesta, in 1959. His business partner Giancarlo Giammetti told Vogue in 1985 that red appears in every one of the house's collections. That is a designer treating one color like a signature, and I find it very persuasive.

So here is my point of view: a red dress does not need a reason. It needs a shade you like against your skin, a length you will actually move in, and very little else. Tomato, scarlet, cherry and brick all read differently, so hold each one up in daylight before you decide. Then keep the shoes, bag and jewelry calm, because the dress is already doing the talking.

The edit opens with party minis, then gowns and maxis for a big night, then midis and maxis for daytime, the easier minis, and evening dresses at the end.

Red minis for a night out

This first group is for a night that starts late. A red mini carries a whole outfit by itself, so the only real decision is the neckline. Strapless, halter, one shoulder or a blazer collar each send a different message, and I would pick that before anything else.

For volume, NBD's Vienna and Yaritza have corset tops over full bubble skirts, the Alyn drops the waist into a ruffle, and the Emilia stacks ruffle tiers on a strapless body. MAJORELLE's Margherita is the halter with a bubble hem, the Summer has cap sleeves over a flared skirt, and retrofete's Mairead is the corset with a full skirt I would wear to a birthday dinner.

If you want sharp instead of sweet, the NBD Jenni and the MAJORELLE Alexandra are blazer dresses, double breasted with gold buttons on the Alexandra. The Devon from MAJORELLE is a simple slip, ELLIATT's Lucetta is a shift with a beaded neckline, and the House of Harlow 1960 x REVOLVE Donna is a clean high neck with no trim at all. For drama, the Lovers and Friends Alix trails a long sash from the hip, the superdown x Hannah Lizzy Arwen has a plunging halter with a scarf that falls past the hem, and Bardot's Nevelle is all sequins.

My rule here: sit down in it before you buy. A bubble or ruffle skirt rides up faster than a slim one, and a strapless top needs a bodice that stays put when you lift your arms. What I would skip is a busy shoe. A thin strappy sandal in black, nude or the same red keeps the line long.

Red gowns and maxis for a big night

This is the group for a wedding, a gala or any invitation with the word formal on it. A long red dress is the opposite of hiding, so I look for one line I love, a slit, a single shoulder or a halter, and let that be the whole story.

The one-shoulder gowns are the easiest to wear well. NBD's Christian adds cut-outs and a soft skirt, the Ilda keeps it to a single column with a slit, and the Jadis Maxi has a draped panel that falls from the hip. For a plunge, the NBD Sabine is a halter column and the Colette and Nathalia are deep V necks with a high slit. The Michael Costello x REVOLVE Syrie is a halter with a keyhole, and the Breslin is a high neck with a cut-out at the waist.

Strapless has its own little crowd. The Amanda Uprichard Ailany has a sweetheart top, NBD's Jake has a rosette at the hip, retrofete's Olivine twists at the bust, and the Michael Costello x REVOLVE Batida is a deeper wine red with a draped skirt. MAJORELLE's Mari Elena is strapless lace from top to hem, and its Fauna puts black lace on the bodice over a sheer skirt. For softer shoulders, the MAJORELLE Simone and Chandra sit off the shoulder, and the Lovers and Friends Annie has small puffs at the arm.

If you want movement, look at the Lovers and Friends Antonia, a high halter neck over a sheer ruffled skirt, or the MAJORELLE Montauk, which runs a ruffle down the slit. The NBD Simone is long sleeved with fringe along the arms. What I would skip: a red gown with a red bag and red shoes. Pick gold or black for the accessories, wear one pair of earrings, and let the dress take the room.

Red midi and maxi dresses

These are the midis and maxis I reach for in daylight. The Four Tier Maxi Dress from VINCE CAMUTO and the Fira Maxi Dress from Petal and Pup are the ones I would wear to a summer wedding with flat sandals and a thin gold chain. The Jia Ponte Combo Maxi Dress from French Connection is the sleek one, with a ponte look that sits smooth on the body, and the House of Harlow 1960 x REVOLVE Mila Midi is a slim slip with thin straps that I would wear with a denim jacket.

For midis, the Sleeveless Double-Ruffle Midi Dress from Tommy Hilfiger is playful but tidy. The Jalyn Midi Dress from Cinq à Sept is the tailored one I would wear to dinner with a blazer over my shoulders. The Nicole Sweetheart Neck Bodycon Midi Dress from Dress the Population is the fitted one. At the formal end, the Asymmetric One Shoulder Ball Gown from Eliza J is made for a black-tie invitation. My fitting-room test: sit down, raise your arms, and walk up a stair. If the hem and the straps behave, you have found it.

Cult Gaia, which Jasmin Larian started in Los Angeles in 2012, makes the Cecily with a built-in shawl and a handkerchief hem, and the Katara and Raith knit midis in a red the brand calls Ghermez. The Jacquemus La Robe and La Robe Pasadena are the clean, sculpted ones, the Magda Butrym strapless long dress and the Monot long dress are for the evening, and the Staud Ellison and the Helsa sateen midi are the ones I would wear to lunch.

Two long, true-red pieces sit in the closing grid of four near the end: the A.L.C. Sandra is a long-sleeve midi with a clean front, AMUR's Scarlet Asymmetrical Day Dress swings from a diagonal hem, and the Norma Kamali Reverse Obie Gown is a draped column for a dressier night.

Red mini dresses, short and sharp

These are the easy ones. A mini in this color is the easiest way to look dressed up without looking dressed for a gala. It works with a leather jacket, a trench or bare legs and a flat sandal, and it takes about two minutes to get ready in.

Start with the Ponte Tank Mini Dress from AQUA, the plain, sleeveless one and a neat study in shape. I would wear it with a denim jacket on a cool evening. Check where each hem lands on your thigh when you sit, because that is the real test of a mini.

For something with more personality, the Can't Help It Mini Dress from Free People has that loose, easy mood, and the Flower Petal Mini Dress from FARM Rio brings a lively, graphic feel. The Nicky Puff Sleeve Mini Dress from Ramy Brook is the one I would pair with slim heels and nothing else. The Double Breasted Mini Dress from Argent looks like tailoring, so a pair of pointed flats suits it. The Gwen Mini Dress from STAUD is the sharp, structured choice.

Then there are the details. The Lorene Embroidered Eyelet Mini Dress from Alice and Olivia leans on texture, so keep your jewelry small. The Remalia Strapless Mini Dress from Bardot is the one for a bare-shoulder evening with a cropped jacket. Pick one with a feature you like, then let it carry the look.

Cult Gaia does the short ones in knit, too: the Lillie has front cutouts and the Luka a mock neck, and both work with flat boots. The Riti layers floral embroidery over red, and De La Vali's Perisa is the draped jersey mini for a night out.

Evening dresses, from satin to jersey

This is the group for evenings that call for real fabric. Satin catches light and holds a shade, so a deep red looks richer here than almost anywhere else. It also shows every crease, so steam it before you go.

Miss Circle makes the dramatic ones at the start of the group. The Talia Red Satin Lace Corset Maxi Dress has lace and a corset bodice, and I would wear it with bare shoulders and nothing around the neck. The Zayda Red High Slit Corset Satin Gown has the slit for a long stride. The Women Ivona Red Halter Neck Double Duchess Satin Gown and the Ivona Halter Neck Double Duchess Satin Corset Gown share a halter neck, which frames the shoulders and works beautifully with an updo and a pair of drop earrings.

Beyond those, the Asymmetrical Satin Dress from MANGO is a lighter, simpler answer, and I would wear it with strappy sandals. The Satin Sleeveless A Line Ankle Dress With Bow from Mac Duggal has a bow and an ankle length, which makes it easy to dance in. The Satin Back Crepe Ruffle Wrap Midi Dress from Coast is the one I would wear to a daytime wedding, since the wrap shape adjusts as you move. The Ricki Maxi Dress from Petal and Pup is the relaxed one, a satin maxi in a deep ruby wine with short butterfly sleeves and a V neck, and the one I would pick for a long dinner.

Past the satin, the group widens into silk, crepe and jersey. Caroline Constas's Palmer Gown is oxblood satin with a boned bodice and short puff sleeves, STAUD's Cadence is a bias-cut crepe-back satin in pinot with beaded straps, and Reformation's Emilee is silk charmeuse with a halter neck. L'Agence's Akiya and Amsale's liquid satin gown are the clean, quiet ones, while Maygel Coronel, SIEDRÉS and SIMKHAI's Norvelle do jersey for a dinner where you want to sit comfortably for hours. Alice and Olivia's Palma is the ruffled one with a high-low hem, and the Mirror Palais cowl dress has a plunging back, so wear your hair up.

What I would skip: a big necklace with a halter or corset bodice, because the neckline is already the feature. Skip a shade of lipstick that fights the dress, too. Keep makeup warm and simple, and choose gold or nude shoes if you are unsure. Steam the skirt well, and carry a small bag so the silhouette stays clean through the evening.

How I choose and wash mine

When I pick one of these, I ask three things. Where is it going, how will I travel in it, and what is the one thing I want people to notice. A maxi suits a long day outdoors, a mini suits a short night, and a gown suits a room with a dress code. Answer those, and the choice usually makes itself.

Red has a deep history in dyes, too. Smithsonian Magazine says cochineal, a tiny insect that lives on cacti, gave us a prized red, and it took as many as 70,000 dried insects to make a pound of dye. In India, the V&A notes, red is a popular wedding color because it signals future success and prosperity.

Care is simple. Iowa State University Extension advises washing a brilliantly colored garment alone the first time, in cool or cold water, because warm water can make fibers release color. Check the tag, and if it says wash separately, expect it to bleed. Do that, and your favorite shade should stay vivid for many wears.
