Roberto Coin Necklaces and Fine Jewelry

Roberto Coin Necklaces and Fine Jewelry

Roberto Coin founded his company in 1977 in Vicenza, Italy, the City of Gold, and for about 20 years made jewelry for other brands before launching under his own name in 1996. Since the first Appassionata collection every piece carries a small ruby set on the inside, touching the skin, as a symbol of love, happiness and good fortune. This edit gathers Venetian Princess flower pendants, Love in Verona hoops and bangles, Tiny Treasures charms, Principessa bracelets, station necklaces and paperclip chains in 18K gold.

Flowers, medallions and Tiny Treasures

Roberto Coin founded the company in 1977 in Vicenza, the City of Gold, but for about 20 years he made jewelry for other brands. Before that he worked in hotel management, with a diploma from the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, and from 1970 ran his own hotel, the Duke of Richmond, in Guernsey. He launched under his own name in 1996 with the first Appassionata collection, and every piece since has carried a small ruby set on the inside, touching the skin, as a symbol of love, happiness and good fortune, an idea inspired by Ancient Egypt. The ruby is a synthetic gemstone, chosen to protect human rights. That secret detail is the best reason to look closely at the first group. The Venetian Princess pieces are inspired by Venetian palaces, with a small diamond flower as the motif, and they appear here as the rose gold carnival multi gemstone pendant, the petite allover diamond flower necklace and the reversible medallion ring. Love in Verona is the four-petaled floral line, in the enamel hoops, the ridged bangle and the flower drop earrings. The Tiny Treasures chain bracelet in ruby and the cross stud earrings are the smaller gestures, and a tennis necklace guide is useful if you are deciding between the station necklaces and a continuous line.

Principessa, paperclips and long chains

The second group is more about gold itself. The Principessa flower chain necklace, the flower stud earrings and the flower chain bracelet continue the floral idea, while the paperclip bracelet and the bold gold diamond paperclip link chain bracelet are for people who prefer links. Appassionata is known for fabric-like woven gold, and Coin used machines originally meant to weave metal for car exhaust pipes to spin gold wire, which says a lot about how he approached the material. The long link chain necklace at 33 inches, the Princess diamond flower lariat necklace and the dual-chain Venetian Princess pendant necklace are the layering pieces, and sculptural gold jewelry shows how bolder links work together. What I would skip is wearing the long chain with a high neckline that gathers it into a knot; give it open space. The flower drop earrings, the bezel-drop earrings and the huggie hoops cover the ears, with pearl and gold link layering as a reference for stacking necklaces.

How I would wear it

For a first Roberto Coin piece, I would choose a small flower pendant or the Love in Verona hoops, since the ruby inside is the idea that makes the brand what it is. A buying guide to rings, earrings and necklaces is useful for choosing between them, and a Van Cleef bracelet guide is worth reading next if you like flower motifs.
