ROLLA'S Jeans & Shorts: Where to Start

ROLLA'S Jeans & Shorts: Where to Start

ROLLA'S is a Melbourne denim label from two designers who spent years working for global denim names. I like its loose, vintage-minded take on jeans, and this edit covers the jeans, shorts and layers.

The Australian point of view behind ROLLA'S

I tend to trust denim people who got tired of the rules, and that is more or less how ROLLA'S began. Sarah Gilsenan and Andy Paltos spent years designing for global denim labels, then started their own in Melbourne, with Fitzroy as home base. Gilsenan learned to sew from her dressmaker mother, and you can feel that hands-on streak in how the label treats denim as something to loosen up, not a uniform.

It draws on Australian vintage references, then pares them back to clean lines, familiar pocketing and small shifts in volume. The signature back-pocket stitching and the vintage-minded washes are the details I notice first.

That point of view makes this edit more interesting than a catalogue of leg shapes. Barrel, sailor and bootcut jeans sit next to shorts, a cami dress, a mini skirt and two jackets. I like how one familiar material can go from tailored to relaxed just by changing proportion. The trick is deciding whether I want a jeans-first outfit or a top layer that sends the denim somewhere else.

Denim with a little shape

Denim is where the collection makes its point, and there is more than one leg to choose from. The Arc Barrel Jeans and Gigi Barrel Jeans have the curved volume, the Sailor Jeans go wide and long, and the Midtown Bootcut Jeans, Midtown Boot Cord Jeans and Jane Aline Flare Jeans add movement at the hem. The Frankie Loose Jeans is the relaxed one I would wear with a fitted tank or a tucked tee.

Picture her heading out in the Arc Barrel Jeans, a close white top and a suede jacket, then changing nothing for dinner. I would make sure the waist and rise feel right before choosing a leg, and shoes come after that. A neater line through the shoulders keeps barrel volume looking intentional.

Shorts for warmer days

Shorts make the same denim language feel lighter, with a few textures in the mix. The Coasters Short Leatherette Shorts step out of blue-denim territory, while the Dusters Short and Original Short keep the outline simple. The 90's Relaxed Shorts and Lou Shorts are the roomier ones, and the Mirage Short is another easy, casual cut.

Picture a late-summer walk in the Coaster Shorts with an oversized cotton shirt and flat sandals, the shirt open or half-tucked so the hem shows. With the leatherette pair, I would trade a glossy top for a matte knit. What I would skip: any short you have not tried sitting down, because comfort while sitting and walking is the real test.

Layers that shift the mood

This group reads like a small outfit formula instead of one category. The Dune Bomber Jacket is the sporty layer and the Denim Chore Jacket has the workwear note. The Deco Denim Cami Dress keeps denim close to the body, the Rhythm Mini Skirt is the shorter route, and the Arc Barrel gives the outfit a jeans anchor.

In my fashion dreams, she wears the Denim Chore Jacket from a morning market to an evening patio, with the Rhythm Mini Skirt and simple sandals. I would get the shoulder right first so a knit can sit underneath without pulling, then keep the rest spare. ROLLA'S looks clearest to me when one denim shape gets the attention and everything else stays quiet.

What I want from a pair of jeans

Good denim is a decision about proportion, not a checklist of trends. In 2025 the label put Helena Christensen in a campaign built around the Gigi Barrel in its Helena Rinse wash, and I like the reminder that a pair of jeans can do the main work.

I would start with the rise, then think about how much room I want through the hip and leg before settling on a wash. A jacket or a simple top can change the mood without asking the denim to be anything else. Although I know I will still end up in the barrel.
