Rust and Turquoise Outfits to Try This Fall

Rust and Turquoise Outfits to Try This Fall

Rust and turquoise outfits borrow the color of old copper turning green, and it works just as well on a person. I pair rusty suede, cord and leather with turquoise in four looks.

When the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in New York Harbor in 1886, it was the brown of a new penny. By 1906 the copper had weathered into the green patina we know now. That is the whole case for rust and turquoise, really. One is the metal and the other is what the metal turns into, so they look like they belong together even at full strength.

I like this pairing most in fall, when rust is already showing up in suede and corduroy and turquoise reads as a surprise instead of a beach color. Most of the turquoise below is jewelry, because good turquoise clothing is rare, and a stone necklace is the easiest way to try it.

A quick test: hold a turquoise ring against your rustiest sweater. If the sweater suddenly looks warmer, you are in.

Mood board for rust and turquoise outfits: four street-style photos of women wearing rust and turquoise, close-ups of the Julietta beaded necklace, the Khaite ankle boots, the Bottega Veneta shoulder bag, the Stouls midi dress and the Gucci silk-satin shirt from this edit, and two still lifes in both colors

Start With One Piece of Each

Start with one rust piece and one turquoise piece, and wear them with clothes you already own. Dragon Diffusion's Nantucket tote is woven leather in a deep brick red, and Valentino's Révélé suede pumps are a proper burnt orange. For the turquoise, Julietta's Donna necklace is turquoise and crystal beads, and Jia Jia's Jumbo Heishi bracelet mixes turquoise beads with 14-karat gold. Any one of the four is enough with jeans and a white shirt.

Turquoise Velour, Rust Cords

This is the weekend version. Suzie Kondi's Tilos sweatshirt is cotton-blend velour in a bright turquoise, soft enough to feel like loungewear but sharp enough to leave the house in. Veronica Beard's Holt corduroy flares bring the rust, and the ridges of the cord give the color some texture, so it reads as warm instead of loud. Birkenstock 1774's Naples loafers are leather trimmed with raffia, and Déhanche's Hollyhock Stone belt is brown leather set with turquoise, which ties the top to the bottom.

A Turquoise Shirt, a Rust Leather Skirt

Gucci's silk-satin shirt is the most turquoise thing in this edit, a bright stone blue with a soft sheen. Tuck it into Stouls' Winona leather midi skirt, which is the color of a terracotta pot, and the outfit is done. Jimmy Choo's Romy 85 suede pumps pick up the skirt, and Roxanne Assoulin's Stone Mini Heart earrings bring the turquoise back up near your face.

How to wear it: leave the shirt open at the neck so the earrings show. Two big pieces in two colors is plenty.

The Rust Dress, Turquoise Boots

Stouls' Becky dress is rust suede cut to the midi, which is about as fall as a dress gets. The surprise is underneath. Khaite's Clive ankle boots are pale turquoise ostrich with embroidery, and they turn a quiet dress into the one people ask about. Mateo's gold necklace with turquoise and diamonds adds a little more, and Bottega Veneta's Dustbag in brown Intrecciato keeps the rest of the outfit grounded.

What I would skip: a turquoise bag as well. With the boots and the necklace, you have all the extra color you need.

A Rust Corduroy Blazer, a Turquoise Skirt

Veronica Beard's Livvy Dickey blazer comes in a rust corduroy close to the Holt flares, so the two can share a closet. Here it goes over Max Mara's Afoso maxi skirt, gathered turquoise jersey that moves when you walk. Alaïa's Le Coeur 55 mules are turquoise satin on a small heel, and Loren Stewart's single earring adds one small point of turquoise and diamond. Wear the one earring and leave the other ear bare.

Keep the Turquoise in One Place

Rust is the easy half. Most closets already have a cognac boot or a brick sweater, so the turquoise is the part to choose carefully. I would start with one piece of jewelry and wear it with rust for a few weeks before buying anything bigger. When this pairing goes wrong, it is usually because the turquoise is scattered across a bag, a shoe and a scarf at once. Put it in one spot, near your face if you can, and let the rust fill in the rest.
