SHASHI Jewelry: Pieces Worth the Price

SHASHI Jewelry: Pieces Worth the Price

SHASHI is a New York jewelry label with a soft spot for color, from jewel studs to friendship bracelets. I like how it treats earrings and rings as small personal choices instead of a matching set.

Who built SHASHI

I have a weakness for jewelry that feels chosen rather than assigned, and SHASHI is very much that. Danna Kobo and Yuvi Alpert met in Miami and started with Ruby Kobo, their bohemian-luxury line. SHASHI followed as its more approachable sister, and by 2011 Kobo was putting her energy into it while Alpert looked after production for Ruby Kobo.

That split explains the personality. SHASHI took the same creative streak into colorful friendship bracelets, necklaces and dainty jewel studs. There is no single uniform look, just a back and forth between delicate metal, vivid color and pieces made to layer. It reads like personal styling, not a dress code.

The founders draw on California, New York, Tel Aviv and Hong Kong, and I like that mix. A neat little hoop and a bright beaded strand can share a jewelry box without either one trying to be the whole story. For this edit I am staying with the earrings and rings, where a plain tee or slip dress picks up a point of view with very little effort.

Jewelry with a little color

SHASHI's jewelry box holds tiny anchors and more decorative pieces. I would wear the Pierre Stud next to the Caroline Large Stud or the Tsuki Hoop, then bring in color with the Emerald Baguette Drop Earring or the Alice Gemstone Earring. The Empress Pearl Earring softens the mood, and the Oval Travel Ring and the Whisper Earring are quiet ones to keep close. The Fallen Leaf Tennis Necklace is the one I would save for a neckline that gives it room. I went deeper on a related idea in MEGA Jewelry: The Pieces Worth the Price. Picture her leaving a late lunch for dinner in jeans and a white shirt, with the Hyacinthe Earring and the Oval Travel Ring doing all the work. I would pick one color story, pearl or gemstone, and let a simpler hoop or stud balance it. If you like jewelry that sits close and stays quiet, the Pierre Stud, Tsuki Hoop and Caroline Large Stud are the easy place to begin.

The pieces that feel personal

I keep coming back to SHASHI for jewelry with a little story tucked into it. It began as the friendlier counterpart to Ruby Kobo, and that origin still makes sense to me: expressive enough to feel chosen, relaxed enough for an ordinary Tuesday. What I would skip is anything that fights a patterned neckline or a pile of other jewelry. Start with one pair of earrings you can wear with your usual outfit and keep the rest simple.

Where the line gets interesting

The newer pieces make me want to choose slowly, a few small decisions rather than one grand matching suite. The Vert Imperial Necklace and the Porter Necklace are two different starting points at the neckline, and the Diamond Pinky Ring is a quieter detail for the hand. Among the earrings, the Silver Flower Earring, Maxine Earring, Villa D'Este Earring, Crawford Earring and Clementine Earring in Gold each make a different kind of focal point, so I would pick one pair for the day and leave it there. The Rhode Stud and the Marquise Stud suit an outfit that already has a strong collar or print, while the Mercer Pearl Earring and the Bessett Oval Drop Earring can lead when the neckline is simple.

The hoops and drops stop the selection from turning into all occasion jewelry. I would compare the Knot Hoop, Daily Diamond Hoop and Kasumi Hoop for repeat wear, then bring in the Eugenie Tortoise or the Bronco Earring when a plain outfit needs contrast. The Bezel Drop Emerald Earring, Una Gemstone Earring and Sierra Drop Earring give me a reason to put color or length near the face.

My tip is to get dressed first and add the necklace or earring after, instead of layering everything at once. What I would skip: a statement drop with a statement necklace on an already busy collar. One point of focus reads better, and the rings and earrings can still feel like a set without matching exactly.
