Our guide to sheer tops covers chiffon blouses, mesh long sleeves, sheer knits, lace and organza shirts for fall layering. I start with Yves Saint Laurent's 1968 see-through blouse and tell you how I would wear each piece.

Sheer Tops: How a 1968 See-Through Blouse Became Daywear
Where the see-through look began
The Musee YSL Paris dates the first topless blouse to Yves Saint Laurent's spring-summer 1968 collection, a see-through piece the American press baptized the "see-through blouse." The black chiffon "nude dress" followed the next season. The idea has been grown-up ever since, and I like that they started as couture and not as a dare.
Saint Laurent worked with chiffon, lace and tulle through the 1960s and kept returning to them. His own line was that the important thing with diaphanous fabrics is to maintain their mysterious nature. That is the best instruction I know for sheer tops: reveal a little, and let the fabric do the rest. Chiffon looks delicate but is a relatively strong, balanced weave, so a good blouse is sturdier than it appears.
Start with the blouses, because they are the easiest way in. Picture her in the Nili Lotan Remie, a polka dot silk chiffon blouse with a gathered neckline, tucked into dark trousers for a Monday meeting. The Veronica Beard Ashlynn is a dark floral silk chiffon with sheer sleeves, and it looks right with a slip skirt after work. For a lower-key day I would reach for the Cynthia Rowley Salina, a black sheer button-front shirt that wants nothing more than a tank beneath it. The Bardot Ashton in ivory, with ruffled trim and billowing sleeves, is the romantic one.
My October tip: layer a camisole or bralette underneath, then add a blazer or a knit vest on top. The sleeves stay sheer, and the day stays covered.

Sheer chiffon and silk blouses
Mesh long sleeves, printed and plain
A mesh top is a sheer top with a little grip. It is stretchier and more fitted than chiffon, which makes it a layering piece first and a statement second. Bring a tank or a bralette in a matching tone and it reads as a second skin, not a reveal.
The superdown Eliza is the plain one: black sheer mesh with a crew neck, a layer I would wear under a slip dress with tights and boots. The Rails Joelle is a floral mesh mock-neck, and the Stine Goya Echoes in Flowers has the same sheer, printed idea in a softer mood. If you want a bit of edge, the Moschino Jeans top is black mesh printed with red roses, and the Free People Lilly is leopard in a fitted shape. The AFRM Zadie is teal floral power mesh with a high neck, and the Acne Studios Edenise carries a trompe l oeil bow on stretchy mesh.
Harper's Bazaar India suggests tonal layering for a barely-there effect, and printed mesh takes to it well. Pick one color from the print and echo it underneath.
Try this in the fitting room: raise your arms and sit down. Mesh should stretch without pulling at the underarm, and the neckline should stay put.
What I would skip: a printed mesh top with a printed skirt. Let the top be the pattern, and keep the bottom quiet.

Sheer knits for layering
A sheer knit is the quiet cousin of the chiffon blouse, and October is when it earns its place. It works as the layer under a blazer, and Harper's Bazaar India points to a bralette under a gauzy shirt or a sharply cut blazer thrown over a sheer top as easy ways to make it day-ready. Knit makes both of those feel less fragile.
The Helmut Lang Layer in optic white is a sheer turtleneck made to sit under something, and the SANS FAFF Alpaca Sheerline is a white fine-knit long sleeve in the same spirit. The Kenneth Cole Collection crewneck is cream and sheer, and I would wear it with a camisole and wide-leg trousers. For something sleeveless, the L'Academie Camryn is a peachy pink mock-neck, and the Helsa draped tank is white and loose. The Marcella Alicia is black and sheer over a bralette, which is how I would style it all the way through. The Varley Callie is an open-knit cotton v-neck in oatmeal, and the Rails Giovanna is white pointelle with flutter sleeves.
Tonal pairings feel modern: think ivory, sand or blush stacked delicately. A cream knit over a sand camisole is the whole idea.
Check the hand: hold the knit over your palm in daylight. If you can see your skin clearly, you want a layer beneath it. Wash fine knits flat.
What I would skip: a sheer knit with a clingy bottom and no coverage anywhere. Give it a layer.

Lace tops, from dressy to daily
Vogue's Paris fall/winter 2026 wrap noted lace at several shows, from second-skin lace dresses at Saint Laurent to sweeping sheer lace gowns at McQueen. A lace top is the small, wearable version of that, and a long-sleeve one suits October far better than a camisole does.
Black lace is the easy entry. The Alice + Olivia Delaina is a lace turtleneck, the rag & bone Bardot is a sheer long sleeve, and the Hanky Panky Signature Lace long sleeve is stretch lace that I would wear under a blazer or a leather jacket. The Milly Arlo is a textured lace button-up, which is a shirt first and lace second. For lighter tones, the Isabel Marant Brany is white stretch lace with a scalloped texture, the Free People Lunar Ash is ivory with a scalloped hem and flutter sleeves, and the Sanctuary Dreamer is a cream lace shirt with a collar. The AKNVAS Freja is brown floral lace in a mock neck, which feels fresh.
Who What Wear suggests an oversize leather jacket over a sheer camisole with baggy jeans, and the same recipe works with a lace long sleeve and heeled boots.
Test it: turn the top inside out and run a finger along the seams and hem. Lace should feel soft and not scratchy against skin. Hand wash it, and let it air dry.
What I would skip: lace in a heavy winter coat, where the sleeves bunch at the armhole.

Organza and sheer button-up shirts
Organza is the crisp one. It has a crisp hand and stiffness for its weight, where chiffon is more flowing and airy. That means an organza shirt holds its shape, and the sheerness comes from a sharp collar and a clean line, not from drape.
The LE BOP organza button-down is ivory with a collar and patch pockets, and the Renggli is a sheer midnight navy shirt in polyester organza. The Joe's Jeans Organza Boyfriend is olive brown with chest pockets, and the GIA STUDIOS Lisse is black silk organza, the one I would pick for a dinner with tailored trousers. Plaid is the playful route, with the Petal & Pup Marni in red plaid organza. For a pretty detail, the JLUXLABEL is white with embroidered florals, and the Polo Ralph Lauren is a navy cotton and silk organdy with gathered sleeves. A black oversize organza shirt with chest pockets from a house label is the one I would layer over a tank.
Who What Wear's blazer idea carries over: a boxy blazer, baggy jeans and flat loafers over a sheer layer gives it a more formal spin. Button it two or three buttons and wear a camisole or bralette beneath.
Try it: check the buttons and the cuffs. Organza frays at the edge, so look for clean seams. Treat silk organza gently.
What I would skip: pairing a sheer shirt with a sheer skirt. One see-through piece is plenty.

How I would pick a first sheer
I would begin with the blouse, because chiffon is the version closest to Saint Laurent's. Check the neckline and the cuffs, and make sure you own something to wear underneath.
Next, add a knit or a mesh long sleeve for cold days, and keep a lace top for the evenings. Choose one color family and let the layers match it, so each piece feels like a decision.
Jane Birkin wore a minidress in 1969 that turned completely transparent in photographs, and nobody has stopped talking about it. Mine is a smaller ask: a silk shirt, a good camisole and a blazer.
