Short Trench Coat: How I Wear the Cropped, Belted Take

Short Trench Coat: How I Wear the Cropped, Belted Take

A short trench coat is the cropped, waist-length take on the classic, and this edit sorts forty of them by length and fabric. I cover cropped jackets, minis for dresses and skirts, and denim, suede and leather versions.

Who made the first trench

Nobody can say for sure who invented the trench coat. Burberry and Aquascutum both claim it, and Smithsonian magazine says it is unclear which came first. The fabric is easier to pin down: Thomas Burberry patented gabardine in 1879, a tightly woven, weatherproof twill, and the words trench coat first appeared in print in 1916, in a tailoring trade journal.

So the coat is old, and the cropped trench coat is the newest thing to happen to it. Vogue Arabia calls it the outerwear of 2026, waist-length and often boxy, good with high-waisted trousers, full skirts and relaxed denim. I agree, and I would add one opinion: the belt matters more on a short coat, because it is doing all the work of the waist.

The first group here is the true cropped cut, and I would start with the double-breasted ones. The Burberry Double-breasted cropped cotton trench coat is the most faithful to the original idea, with the double-breasted front you expect, and the Saint Art Berkley Cropped Trench adds a short cape across the shoulders that does the job of the old storm flap. The Avec Les Filles Double Breasted Cropped Trench Jacket and the rag & bone Jamie cropped cotton trench coat are a little sharper, and they sit well over straight trousers and a white tee. The ANINE BING Rickie and the LE BOP Hardy are the cropped ones I would try if you want a trench that does not look like a costume, and the two Lioness styles, the Blanc in olive and the Cropped Trencherous Coat in tan, bring the same shape in softer colors.

For something looser, the AQUA Crop Trench Coat, the Good American Cropped Trench Jacket and the ELLE Collection Cropped Trench are easy to throw over a slip dress or baggy jeans. The a.ren Clarke Cropped Trench Coat and the Joe's Jeans The Liz Cropped Trench Coat are the ones I would try if you like a little shape at the waist. Then there are the odd, interesting ones: the Ganni Trench jacket in double cotton, the Jovonna London Cropped Trench Jacket and the JNBY Open-back cropped trench coat, which has a back detail that makes it a bit of a conversation piece.

My fitting-room test is simple: lift your arms. If the hem rides up past your waist and stays there, go up a size or pick a longer cut.

Thirty-two short trenches, from gabardine-minded classics to denim and leather.

Short and mini trenches for dresses and skirts

The second group is the short and mini trenches, and this is where the length changes the whole mood. These hit at the hip or a little above it, so they read like a proper coat that happens to be abbreviated. They are my pick for skirts and dresses, because the hem of the coat sits above the hem of the skirt and nothing gets lost.

The BCBG Short Collared Cinched-Waist Trench Coat and the Donna Karan New York Short Crepe Notch Collar Trench Coat are the polished pair. They suit a work week, and I would wear either over tailored trousers and loafers. The Burberry Short Kensington Heritage trench coat leans on the old codes, with the double-breasted front you would expect, and it works with just about anything in your closet. The Pinko Short double-breasted trench coat and the Levi's Regular Short Double Breasted Trench Coat are the easier, more relaxed take, and the Levi's pair especially looks right over jeans.

Two of the Avec Les Filles styles are here as well, the Button-Front Short Trench Coat and the Double-Breasted Short Trench Coat. I like them because they do not try too hard. If you want something with a little twist, the Lauren Ralph Lauren Reversible Short Trench gives you two looks in one coat, and the I.N.C. International Concepts Bubble-Hem Short Trench Coat has a rounded hem that plays well against a straight skirt.

The Veronica Beard Jean Cropped Conneley Trench Coat is the wool one, and the FRAME Uniform Trench Coat is the belted option in military green. The Favorite Daughter Rue Cropped Trench in navy and the RAILS Jett Jacket in olive round out the group with two quieter colors.

The Steve Madden Short Hooded Trench Coat is the casual one, good with sneakers and a hoodie underneath if that is how you dress. The Miss Circle Vanetta Tan High Collar Double-Breasted Trench Mini Coat is the shortest of the lot, and I would keep everything else simple with it. The Acne Studios Short trench coat is the plain, no-fuss one, and it suits an outfit in neutrals.

Check where the sleeve ends. A short coat with a long sleeve looks deliberate, and one with a sleeve that stops early can look like a mistake.

Denim, suede and leather, the edgier end

The third group is where the trench gets a second personality: denim, suede and leather. The original coat was built from gabardine, and the V&A notes that the trench's metal D-rings were originally designed for hanging a sword. So a trench was always a piece of kit, and these versions just swap the fabric.

The leather ones are the most dramatic. The Acne Studios leather one and the Reiss Bodie Belted Cropped Leather Trench Jacket both look sharp over a plain knit and straight trousers, and the Reiss has the belt that gives the shape back. The Maralyn & Me Cropped Double-Breasted Faux-Leather Trench Coat gets the same look in faux leather. The Furniq UK Lydia Suede Cropped Trench-Style Jacket and the AQUA Cropped Faux Suede Trench Coat are the softer option, and the color of suede does a lot for a simple outfit of jeans and a tee.

The denim trenches are the easiest to wear every day. The FARM Rio Denim Cropped Trench Jacket, the Liverpool Los Angeles Cropped Denim Trench Coat and the Petal and Pup Miranda Cropped Denim Trench jacket all work like a jean jacket with better manners. Wear them with a dress, a long skirt or white jeans and you have a spring look that needs no thinking.

The last stretch widens the net. Favorite Daughter's Cropped Charles comes in a plaid and a plain cotton blend, and The Frankie Shop's Stan is a soft taupe cropped trench. GWYN's Diane in black and Sutton in camel are the polished pair, and the JW Anderson Cropped Trench is the more fashion-forward one. Then come the longer coats for anyone who wants the full length after all: the Lafayette 148 and Sanderlak leather trenches, both belted, Balmain's long gabardine trench, the closest thing here to the original coat, and newer arrivals from Max Mara, Saint Laurent, Chloé and Lemaire.

What I would skip: pairing a denim trench with denim of the same wash from head to toe, and wearing a leather one over something loose and shiny. Both end up looking like a costume. Break up the denim with a white or black layer, and keep the leather one with matte fabrics.

Denim, suede and leather, plus a few more trenches

How I choose one

Here is how I would actually choose. Start with what you wear underneath. If your closet is mostly high-waisted trousers and jeans, a cropped cut with a belt is the right one. If you live in dresses and midi skirts, go for the short lengths, where the hem of the coat sits clear of the skirt.

Then think about the fabric. A classic double-breasted style goes with everything and lasts from season to season. Denim is for the weekend. Suede and leather are for evenings and for days when the rest of the outfit is plain.

Last, do the small tests. Lift your arms, button the front, cinch the belt and sit down. Check the shoulder seam and the length of the sleeve. If it passes all of that, wear it with a white tee the first time, and you will know exactly where it belongs in your week.
