Shower Routine Essentials: The Everything Shower

The everything shower: a long Sunday night shower with scrubs, hair masks and face steams. Shop body care and shower essentials.

What an Everything Shower Actually Is

The everything shower started as a TikTok phrase and turned into a ritual: the once a week shower where you exfoliate, shave, deep condition, mask and moisturize in one long, steamy session. I do mine on Sunday night, when the week has not started yet and nobody needs the bathroom.

The order matters more than the products. Wash and exfoliate first so everything after it lands on clean skin. Do your hair while the conditioner can sit. Let the steam soften your face, then finish outside the shower while your skin is still damp.

The first group is the wash and scrub step. Nécessaire's Hinoki body wash and Salt & Stone's Santal & Vetiver are the two that make the bathroom smell like a spa. Kiehl's grapefruit and original musk cleansers are the classic pair, and Moroccanoil's shower gel smells like the brand's hair oil. L'Occitane's almond shower oil is the one for dry winter skin. Grown Alchemist's smoothing exfoliant and Rosebud Woman's skin brush do the scrubbing.

Six everything shower products pinned on cards: Nécessaire body wash, Crown Affair scalp scrub, Gisou hair mask, Elemis cleansing balm, La Mer cream and Salt & Stone body oil

Hair and Shave

While the body wash rinses off, the hair step starts. Crown Affair's Cleansing Scalp Scrub Shampoo does the work of a scalp treatment, and Mount Lai's LED scalp massager makes it feel like a salon wash. Pureology's Pure Volume is the gentle everyday shampoo. Then the mask or conditioner goes on and sits while you shave. Gisou's Honey Gloss mask and Crown Affair's Hydrating Conditioner are both made for that long sit.

Flamingo's razor and Athena Club's whipped shaving cream are the shave pair, and T3's turban towel takes over once you step out, so your hair is not dripping down your back while you do everything else.

Face in the Steam

By now the bathroom is full of steam, which is the best moment for your face. Elemis' Pro-Collagen balm melts off the day, Mount Lai's jade gua sha glides over a damp face with a few drops of oil, and Clarins' Cryo-Flash mask and Dr. Jart+'s Cryo Rubber mask cool everything down afterward. Patchology and Peter Thomas Roth make the eye patches I put on while I finish my hair.

La Mer's Crème de la Mer and Therabody's TheraFace LED mask are the last step for the face, once you are out and dry.

Out of the Shower

The body step is the one people skip, and it is the one you feel the next day. Damp skin takes oil and cream best, so I keep these on the counter rather than in a drawer. Salt & Stone's Santal & Vetiver body oil and L'Occitane's almond oil go on first.

Then a cream: Nécessaire's fragrance free Body Cream, Sol de Janeiro's Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, Fenty's Butta Drop body milk, Summer Fridays' vanilla Body Butter Balm, or Kate McLeod's solid Body Stone, which melts against warm skin. Dr. Barbara Sturm's Good Night supplement is the last thing before bed.

How I Keep It From Taking All Night

An everything shower should feel like a reset, not a chore. I keep it to once a week, I lay everything out before I turn on the water, and I never try a new product on the same night as a new scrub.

If you only add one thing, make it the body step after the shower. Five minutes with an oil or cream on damp skin changes how your skin feels for the rest of the week.
