Denim got looser and the fit moved to the waist. Barrel legs and slung wide legs are the shapes doing the work. Here it is as trousers, outerwear and dresses.
Slouchy Denim Now

Wide leg and baggy jeans
The barrel leg is the shape of the moment. Frame's Bubble, Nili Lotan's Shon and the Lauren Ralph Lauren high rise barrel curve out at the thigh and taper back in at the ankle, which is a different silhouette to a straight wide leg. Mother's Side Zip Slung and the Citizens of Humanity Ayla cargo keep it looser all the way down.
Side zips and cargo pockets
The Mother Side Zip Slung moves the closure off the front, which keeps the waist flat. The Citizens of Humanity Ayla Cargo adds pockets down the leg and more volume with them.
Two barrel leg jeans
The Frame Bubble curves out at the thigh and back in hard at the ankle. The Nili Lotan Shon is the subtler barrel and passes for a wide straight from across a room.
Studded and plain wide legs
The Veronica Beard Grant runs studs down the seam, which catches light as you walk. The Victoria Beckham relaxed wide leg is the plain, high waisted version.
Denim jackets and shirts
Denim outerwear got the same treatment. TWP's Dawson and the Acne Studios gathered jacket sit away from the body, and Our Legacy's cinched version pulls it back in at the hem. The shirts from Agolde, Nili Lotan and Ami Paris are the layer that makes double denim work without looking like a costume.
Denim shirts with detail
The AMI Paris shirt keeps the embroidery small and at the chest. The Nili Lotan Suzette adds a tie at the neck, which makes it read as a blouse rather than workwear.
Oversized and cinched jackets
The TWP Dawson is the big one, cut to go over a knit without pulling. The Our Legacy cinched jacket pulls in at the hem, so the volume sits at the chest instead.
Gathered and classic denim jackets
The Acne Studios gathered jacket puts fullness at the shoulder, which changes the whole line. The Dolce and Gabbana is the traditional cut, close and short.
Denim skirts and dresses
Skirts and dresses are the least obvious use. Khaite's Anden and the Carolina Herrera midi keep the denim plain and let the length carry it, while Farm Rio's scalloped richelieu and Ulla Johnson's Cadiz add cutwork. Self-Portrait's belted halterneck is the one that reads as evening.
Cutwork and embroidered denim skirts
The Farm Rio scalloped midi opens the denim with cutwork, which lightens a heavy fabric. The Ulla Johnson Cadiz keeps the denim solid and puts the pattern on top.
A denim dress and a plain midi
The Self-Portrait halterneck dress is the one you can wear to a wedding in summer. The Khaite Anden skirt is deliberately plain and does the heavy lifting in a work outfit.
Two midi skirts, heavy and light
The Carolina Herrera denim midi is structured and holds a wide A line. The Eileen Fisher is lighter cotton denim and falls straight, which is easier for travel.
Our honest take
If you take one thing away, it is that slouchy denim only works when one thing is fitted. A baggy jean with an oversized jacket and a loose shirt gives you no line at all, and the whole outfit reads as unfinished rather than relaxed. Pick the jean as the loose element and keep the top half close, or invert it. The barrel legs here suit more people than a straight wide leg does, because they narrow at the ankle and give the eye somewhere to land. Watch the rise on anything described as slung, since it sits lower than the photographs suggest. And denim skirts are the quiet win in this edit, since they do the same thing with far less fabric to manage.
