Snif and the Case for a Wardrobe of Scents Instead of One Signature

Snif and the Case for a Wardrobe of Scents Instead of One Signature

A look at Snif, the fragrance brand that sells scents with a seven-day trial and names them like inside jokes. Start with Sweet Ash, Crumb Couture, 2% and Vanilla Vice, then layer with the candle and body whips.

Most perfume is sold as a signature, one bottle you are supposed to grow into and wear for a decade. Snif started from the opposite idea. Bryan Edwards, a former management consultant, and Phil Riportella, who came out of fintech, had the notion in 2018 and made it official in 2020, launching in October of that year. Their pitch was a wardrobe of scents rather than a single one, sold online with a try-before-you-buy trial and waitlist drops. They also built a scent board of about 30 tastemakers, customers included, who weighed in on what actually got made. That is an unusual way to run a fragrance company, and it explains why Snif still reads like a group chat about smells instead of a department store counter. The names promise a mood before you have smelled a thing: Sweet Ash, Crumb Couture, 2%, Vanilla Vice. Those are the four bottles in the first grid below, and they sit on the sweeter, edible end of the shelf, where the brand does its best work.

Twelve boxes on a pale grey page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Snif Sweet Ash Fragrance, Snif Crumb Couture Fragrance, Snif 2% Fragrance, Snif Vanilla Vice Fragrance, Snif Gentle Reminder Fragrance, Snif Me Fragrance, Snif Dead Dinosaur Fragrance, Snif Rose Era Fragrance, Snif Scent Wardrobe Sample Set, Snif Sweet Ash Candle, Snif Vanilla Vice Body Whip and Snif Crumb Couture Body Whip.

Softer, stranger, and a little bit nostalgic

Grid two is where the brand gets a little strange, in a good way. Gentle Reminder pairs milky lavender with ube, which is not a combination I would have predicted and is exactly why I wanted it on the list. Me is described as a shape-shifting skin scent, soft but strong, and it is the one I would hand to someone who says they hate sweet perfume. Dead Dinosaur is pitched as your first car scent, and Rose Era goes for dewy rose and strawberry. A gourmand perfume can tip into dessert very quickly, so these four are useful for how much they hold back. The tip is to spray once on the inside of the wrist, walk around for ten minutes, and only then decide. Snif fragrances are meant to be lived in for an afternoon, not judged in the first second.

Four more fragrances to try

Sampling first, then layering

Grid three takes the scent off the skin and into the rest of your day. The Scent Wardrobe Sample Set holds six 2 ml samples of core scents, and the brand pairs it with a seven-day at-home trial, so you only keep what you like. A fragrance sample set is the honest way to shop for a gourmand. The Sweet Ash Candle is earthy and low-key sweet, and the two body whips, Vanilla Vice and Crumb Couture, are whipped creams that echo the perfumes. What I would skip is layering a body whip under a fragrance you have not worn yet, because the scents will fight and you will not know which one to blame. Wear the whip on its own for a few days, then spray the matching perfume over it once you know how it behaves on you.

A wardrobe, not a signature

The idea I keep returning to is that a scent wardrobe suits how people actually live. You do not dress the same for a Tuesday meeting and a Saturday dinner, and there is no good reason your perfume should stay put either. Snif made that feel normal, and did it with a sense of humor. Start with the sample set, pick the two that surprise you, and let the rest of the shelf wait. The best perfume habit is a curious one. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Method Soap, the Teardrop Bottle and Its Scents and Spicebomb Night Vision.
