Source Unknown is Chloe Shim's womenswear label, built on sculpted outerwear, knits and trousers with a slightly unexpected shape. It started as a shop for lesser-known finds, and I like what it has grown into.

Source Unknown Outerwear: What I'd Buy First
From discovery shop to design label
The name sounds like a mystery, but the story is fairly easy to follow. Chloe Shim launched Source Unknown in March 2020 as an online shop for lesser-known labels and new finds, with a private label of her own alongside. She is a well-traveled founder, and you can tell she looks at clothes from more than one direction.
The first breakout was a strapless knit top that sold out fast enough to come back in black and sage. I like how that small story explains the early shop: a simple shape, a touch of trend, and a quick second round when customers wanted another version. Elsa Hosk was spotted in the checkerboard halter knit dress in 2021, which did not hurt.
These days the label reads differently. Its own About page describes a standalone womenswear brand where every collection is designed and developed in-house. The through line I see in the outerwear, knitwear and trousers is familiar pieces nudged into less familiar proportions.

Outerwear with a sculpted outline
This is where the sculpted idea gets literal. Matteo Cinched Blazer and Terzo Hourglass Blazer bring shape through the waist, while Tova Bomber Jacket and Barlow Flight Bomber Jacket loosen the outline for an easier layer. Baia Fleece Barn Jacket and Manuela Shawl-collar Shearling Jacket do more with texture, and Eleni Faux Leather Bomber Jacket is the sharper alternative.
Picture her coming in from a cold walk in Tova Bomber Jacket over a fine knit, then switching to Egizio Puffer Down Jacket when the forecast turns unforgiving. I would pair a dramatic piece like Lyn Long Hair Shearling Jacket with plain trousers and flat shoes, so the coat stays the main event. What I would skip: wearing a shaped blazer and a bomber in the same outfit. Pick the silhouette that matches your mood that day.

Knitwear that changes the silhouette
The knits keep the silhouette in focus instead of hiding under another layer. Noa Wool Cape Sweater gives a wide, cape-like outline, while Corinth Peplum Sweater makes the waist part of the design. Fabbie Layered Cardigan is the more composed way to add dimension, and Meti Eco Fur Zip Cardigan is the tactile outlier that can do the outfit's talking.
Picture her in the Noa with slim trousers and a clean boot for a museum afternoon, or letting the Fabbie hang open over a simple tank at dinner. I would keep everything quiet around the Meti, since the surface already brings the texture.

Trousers with a little more shape
The trousers show how a small shift in proportion can change a familiar bottom. Giacca Ruched Trousers bring gathering, Mika Tuck Trousers and Matteo Belted Tuck Trousers build shape with front tucks, and Ebbe Balloon Trousers offer a broader, rounder line. I like that none of them are interchangeable basics. Each asks for a different balance in the outfit.
For a first try, I would wear the Mika with a close-fitting knit, or the Matteo with a simple tucked tee, and keep the shoe streamlined. If you like a straighter leg, the balloon shape may feel like a lot. Let one sculptural detail carry the outfit and leave the rest plain.

A new chapter in familiar clothes
What keeps me interested is the pivot from discovery shop to a label with its own design language. The early shop built a following on trend-aware finds, and the current collections use tailoring, texture and unusual volume to make familiar pieces feel less expected. I would start with the jacket or trousers whose shape fills a real gap in my closet, then style it with what I already reach for. That is where the sculptural side feels most wearable. Although Ilaria Eco Fur Coat is hard to ignore.
