Stiletto Heels Are Back On Terms You Can Actually Walk In

Stiletto Heels Are Back On Terms You Can Actually Walk In

A heel narrow enough to be named after a knife has survived seventy years of every other shoe shape coming and going. stiletto heels remain the default evening answer for a reason. This edit runs through eight versions across very different labels.

Seventy Years Of The Same Idea

The stiletto arrived in the early 1950s, credited variously to Roger Vivier and to Italian makers, and it was only possible because a steel rod could be embedded in the heel to carry the load. That is a genuine engineering advance rather than a style change, and it is why the shape could not have existed earlier. Everything since has been a variation on pitch and toe. The current market runs from a 55mm everyday height to a 100mm evening one, and the difference between those is enormous in practice and invisible in a photograph.

Eight Labels, Eight Heights

Gianvito Rossi's Gianvito 85 is the reference point for a modern stiletto and the cleanest shape here. Jimmy Choo's Love 65 slingback and Schutz's Scarlett Sling Mid leather slingback are the two slingbacks, which are the most comfortable construction in the group. Santoni's high-heel patent leather pumps and Steve Madden's Hexx stiletto pumps sit at opposite ends of the market with a similar silhouette. Jeffrey Campbell's Twista pumps are the most unusual of these stiletto heels, Sam Edelman's Bianka is the only kitten height, and Reiss's metallic leather stiletto sandals are the only open shoe.

Our honest take

Heel height is less important to comfort than pitch, which is the angle from heel to toe, and two shoes of the same stated height can feel completely different depending on the platform and the toe spring. Try the pitch, not the number. Thin heels sink into grass and grating and the tips wear out quickly, so carry spare tips or get them replaced early. Slingbacks solve width problems and introduce heel slip, which an elastic insert fixes. Patent shows every scuff. If you take one thing away, a 65 to 85mm slingback is the most wearable version of this shoe and a 100mm pump is a seated-event proposition.
